passed a bill granting the right or way
through public lands to oooatruet and
maintain a railroad in the States of Ala
bama and Florida.
The Committee on Public Buildings re-
ported favorably upon the motion of a
Custom house at Atlanta, to oast a quar
ter of a million dollars, whioh was passed.
To enable the Seoretery of War to
oarry ont the prevision, of the aot of
April 23d, 1874, for the relief of the pres
ent sufferers, from the overflow of the
lower Mississippi river, and a joint reso
lution enthorisiag the issue of army ra
tions and olothing to the destitute people
on the Tombigbee, Warrior and Alabama
rivers, three hundred thousand dollara
waa voted.
This ia an amendment to Sundry Civil
Appropriation.
Alcorn anbmitted an amendment placing
the oontrol of the levee system of the
Mississippi river under the Seoretery of
War, and an appropriation of $2,000,000
to oarry on the work, which was ruled out
of order.
The River and Harbor bill waa resumed.
West, from the Transportation Com
mittee, anbmitted an amendment, provi
ding for a board of live engineers to be
appointed by the President to makes
survey of the month of the Mississippi
river, with a view to determine the best
method of obtaining and maintaining a
depth of water sufficient for the purposes
of communication, either by a canal from
said river to the water, of the Gulf, or by
deepening one or more of the natural
outlets of said river. Agreed to.

Committee on Appropriations was in ses
sion to-day, considering the 8enate
amendment, to bills, making appropria
tions for sundry civil expe isos, and for
rivers and harbors, so as to preseut their
report to-morrow morning for aotion of
the House. Tbe only other general ap
propriation bill pending between the two
Houses ia that making appropriations for
the Poet-oflloe Department.
The Senate has appointed a oominittee
to oonfer with that to be appointed by
tpe House ou disagreeing amendments.
Tbe prospect is that the above men
tioned bills will be definitely noted upon
by both branohes to-morrow.
Clerks were engaged to-day engrossing
numirons bills, and otherwise transacting
business pertaining to Congress.
