Is Thera te Be a War ar Basest
The following aztraots are from the
New Orleans Picayunt of Setnrday:
The fact that Ward’s gang of negro
ruffltus took with them to Grant parish a
fail eupply of muskets, with bayonets and
ammunition, is not an isolated faot by
any menus. Thera ia something pecu
liarly ominous about the news to a similar
eti’.ot which oomes from arary quarter of
tue State. It begins to appear that the
aggressions of tbs negroes hero—es mani-
fes el in the the thestres, taloons end
publio oonreyenoea—forme the prelimina
ry to au organized morement de
signed to develop and culminate daring
the aempeign jast now openiag. Scaroely
a day passes but we beer of arms being
potohu.il here, sad of arms baring made
thair appeeranoe in tbs country. Soarcely
an hour goes by witbont revealing to the
careful observer of events fresh evidences
that the impending struggle is likely to
aaauma an nnoenally bitter form—if, in
deed, it do not pass into violsnea and
bloodshed.
How alt thia has come about—whether
it be the result of the falling off of North
ern friends, and a consequent impulse of
recklessness and desperation, or whether
it be the logical and necessary result of
endowing an ignorant people with privi
leges they neither merit nor appreciate—
wa have no inclination to aoaaider. That
the unpleasant truth confronts ns in ail
its menace ia enough—nay, more than
enough for us.
In the struggle whioh wa apprehend is
coming, no one will need, nor will any
one be able to find, the warriore who slay
'thair foaa and save their country on the
stamp, and the b ubers who prsnee at the
head of make-believe brigades, with lace
and frippery stuok all over their foolish,
bedizzeued old oamsnee.
These people have made the issne, but
thay will hardly ba on hand to meet its
shook. Hen who laid away their ragged
Jsokets nine long years ago, and ever
einos have borne themselvee as steadfast
under the indignity as they were wont to
do under peril and defeat—man who hevo
tried to live up to the pesos they were
fairly forced to accept, and who bava thus
far dons so loyally and patieutly—these
man have stirred at last, and they are the
ones who will feoe the trouble when it
oomes. This is the sort of campaign we
believe to be gathering; and matters must
have gone very far, enduranoo have dwin
dled to a curiously fins point, when ooe
who loves Louisiana passing well oan say
ba oarer not how soon the issue oomes.
