We learn from Hon. M. 1. Crawford, a
trustee, that there baa not been even a
semblance of a reconciliation between
Gen. Toombs and ex-Governor Brown
When the trustees Ltd assembled In a
body, Mr. Harris, of Athens, President
of the Southern Mutual Insurance Com
pany, himself a trustee, suggested to
Judge Crawford that for the purpose of
debate it would be for the general good
that an arrangement should be made by
which the unfriendly feeling between
Toombs and Brown oould be allayed so
that eaoh oould allude to the arguments
of the other—recognise eaoh other in
debate—and the body be benefitted there
by. This was specially important as vital
questions would be discussed. Judge
Crawford saw Gen. Toombs, and then
asked •x-OoTernor Jenkinn, vbo
had Dot before thought of tho
■object to see Brown. Toombs
assented and Judge Jenkins eame orsr
•nd stated that Brown bad also dona ao.
Thara was no bandabaking, no meeting,
no forgetting nor forgiviog. If any
oredit ba given for obtaining the tempo
rary truce, it belongs to Ur. Harris of
Athena.
Big IMtv Suit.
A largo one for ono hundred thousand
acrea of the beat land in Western Vir
ginia baa been commenced by B. J,
Moeea, Jr., Eeq., formerly of Colnmbua,
bnt now of New York. He is a son of
Major it. J. Uosea. The suit ia brought
at the instance ef the heirs of Mr. Easton
Yonge,brother of Bragg Yonge,deoeaaed,
Mra. J. Rhodes Browne, et. al. Tho
claimants assert that about 17B7 or 1800
the U. S. Government gave to Mr.
Yonge a patent for the lend, whioh by
unforeseen accidents he failed to posseaa
himself of, and that hia heira have boon
unable to doeo until now. Two large com
panies bought the land from other com
panies, aud they hold atill large traoke.
The Western Virginia Democrat says the
defendants bought the lend of these com
panies tor a bona fide consideration and
in good faith. Wrila of ejeotment have
already been leaned. The land lies in
Braxton, Webster aud Nicholas oonntios.
The journal says if the olaimanta are suc
cessful, some four or five thousand people
wil. he rendered homeleas. While this is
so, a few parties in Columbus would gain
immense wealth.
Mi CMpwUnsi Jtm ts 1X0 IH.triri,
Col. Blandford has withdrawn. Judge
Crawford never had an idea of running,
and haa-none now. There are left in the
Held Hon. Henry R. Harris, the present
incumbent, Judges Buchanan and Pou,
and Col. Mobley, tha latter baviog been
recommended at a meeting of the Harris
county Convention. All will abide Ibe
nomination. This ia on the Democratic
side.
Judge James Johnson, it ia considered,
will ba oerlainly rnn by the Uadioels, un
less some admitted Civil Rights bill man
appears in the field.
J udge Johnson has stated, in conversa
tions, that he soon will resign the Hnperi-
or Court Judgeship of the Chattahooohee
Circuit, when Hon. M. J.Crawford will be
appointed to oueoeed him.
Columkut Ouarde—Skirmteh Drill.
The Colnmbua Guards had a handsome
tnrnont last afternoon. They marobod in
side the Court House square and were ex-
eroised in the skirmish drill. Many of
tha Confeda went through their work with
the preoision of battle days, and the en
tire evoluliona wsreoreditably performed.
Cspt. Shepherd was in aommand. The
drill waa witnessed by a large orowd of
pleased and admiring spectators. The
company now has a bugler who is being
taught the requisite, and soon the com
mand will be drilled by the bugle oalls.
