whioh we recently commented on
Beau Roland, translated by the same gen-

merit, though sensutional iu itn treat-

Mr. E. J. Donnell, a recognized au
thority on cotton, writoa to the New
York Bulletin that “from a careful ,amtl-
yaia of ull the available facta bearing ou
tho situation, ho arrives at tho conclusion
that tho crop of cotton now growing will
t)0 the largest since the war.”
Mr. E. J. Donnell was formerly n gro
eery merchant, of very exten-ive bus ness,
iu Montgomery, Ala. He ia a shrewd and
observing man, but of luto years he haa
generally been among the very highest
ootton oatiuiato mon, aud has greatly
misaed his calculations on one or two oc
casions. Having removed to New York
before ihe wnr, ho does not well under
stand the workings of our changed system
of labor, and therefore hia judgment in
co ton crop matters is not so icliablo ns it
formerly wus.
NALITT REMOVED.
New Yore, August lo.—To-day's Tri
bune says Beecher'a cross-examination
shows him as surrounded by persona un-
worthy of trust, whom be implicitly trust
ed, entangled in a net whose meshes be'
shrank from, because of scandal. It is a
saddening exhibition of weakness, where
an admiring public mo>t looked for
strength. The blackmail feature scarcely
helps Beuoher, but falls like lightning up
on hia as ailauts. It Hhows Tilton’s atti
tude in the business as touching a depth
of infamy; to Moulton it is destruction.
Carpenter only escapes on the ground
that ho knew no better. Unless they can
promptly break the force of this revela
tion, or disprove Beecher’s explicit, and
in the cro4s-examination, detailed aver
ment, the whole pack of bis pursuers are
p aced by it beside Woodhuli, and need
uot occupy the thoughts of decent men or
women no more, forever.
The World says : Beecher haa spoken
out like a man to men, and he deserves,
as we have not the least doubt he will re
ceive, a manly judgment at the hands of
bis countrymen. As for the vermin who
have preyed upon him, it ia unnecessary
to dwell on their monstrous crime ogainst
society, as it is difficult to see how that
crime can be adequately punished.
The Herald says : Beecher has present
ed his case at its best, and we esnnot
doubt that his statement has relieved the
nun is of the vast majority of those who
have read it, almost as if the whole bur-
den of reports were lifted away. It has
cleared the air wonderfully, and if some
mist remains, this much is true : Wiih
Mr. Beecher's absolute denial of the
charges made we are under obligation to
weigh bis statement and counter atste-
uient by the relative credability of the
persons from whom they c<»m*, unless in
trinsically there are contradictious and
inconsistencies which invalidate ether
statement, or uuless the statements are
invalidated by the iucompatabihty of
their general declaration with the facts
they admit.
The Sun says, ns to the charges of
Tilton and Moulton and Carpenter, and
any alleged admission to them : “A man
would not hung a dog on the word or
oath of any of tho throe men who had so
much as the smell of blackmail on their
garments. Tho country cannot peiiuit a
man to be destroyed by the testimony of
characters of this sort against Mr.
Beecher. ”
The journals generally accept Mr.
Beecher’s statement as relieving him
from criminality, but regret his weak
ness.
