The Doctor had tha bad look last week
to lose the oaaary bird whose rieh warb
ling haa delighted so many during the laat
three weeks. The bird wee in its oage,
which had been hung up iu the front
porch of a country house. Hearing the
bird crying, search was immediately made,
and it was found that a three-feet-long
snake had crawled in the cage and had
the canary's head in hia mouth. In a
second the bird was dead. Boiling water
was procured end poured ou the reptile,
which dropped like a shot from the oage
and was Instantly dispatched by stioks in
the handa of several negroea. The Doctor
haa been so strieken with grief that be
haa forgotten to “sail” any one, and
hasn't laughed for a week. That's the
effeet of a fool country snake eating a
town bird. Two lives last and Badness.
It is a matter ot much interest to thoee
who visit New York to keep posted abont
the hotels. Recently there has been
quite a rivalry among tho first-class hotels
sbont their bills-of-fare, eaoh striving to
act the best table for its guests. We
speak moro particularly of the hotels on
Broadway and Fifth Avenue—the Grand
Central being the largest, moat centrally
located and elegantly furnished. Of the
four or five leading hotels, the bills-of-
fere are covered with the nuues of the
most luxuriant viands of the season.
The bill of the Grand Central, especially,
deserves setting apart as a notable speci
men of modern onlinary skill in the num
ber, variety and richness of its dishes.
It contains no lass than elaran (11)
courses for dinner, and gives the houra
tor op leas than ait (6) meals every day,
for the moderate sum of from $3 to $4
(>or day, including, of course, an elegantly
furnished room for each guest. It would
seem from this that the tours of our trav
elers and tho visits of our business men
become rounds of pleasure aa well as of
busiueaa.
