• AngtuU Chronicle girra the follow-
aooount ot . water spout at Langley,
).. on Wednesday craning last:
dense olond was Ant aeen approach,
the pond, being apparently a contud-
tile uintance np. Nothing particular
i thought ot it, the eniaena ot Lang-
be ng at the time occupied in trying
keep cool, a hard thing to do with the
eruiometer at ona hundred degrees in
ahede. But presently a startling cir-
aiuHtanoe occurred. The cloud had halt-
*0# the pond and established connec
tion with the latter. A genuine water
t had in tact been evolrad and an
Aiehue quantity ot water waa rushing
ward through the liquid oooduotor.
n Ant seen, the water spout waa
the dan, and traveled aloely serous
a pond until it reached the railroad
ta'le eork, a distance of a mile and a
naiter from ita starting point, uhen it
sappeared, and tbs cloud moved majes
ty off, Dairying with it thousands ot
ins ot wa.er which had been drawn
i the pond. The latter covering an
_ of six hundred aorea waa, in feet,
ered fully two inches. The huge ool-
< wbioh joined the upper region to
expenea ot water below naembled a
iu form, and rotated horizontally
exoaeding rapidity. Ilia marvellous
with wbioh the oolumn turned Im-
d the beholder immediately with
idea that it waa aasoeiatad with the
irlwind. This was moot probably the
a, aa a tremendous wind passed over
ngnstsfrom the direolion of Langley
me hoars afterward*. Soience ban, da-
•mutrated that in almost every instance
phen mens denominated water
are dependant upon
of the whirling wind,
,ted by some disturbance ot the
laments. Eleotricity, that great foroa
ieh wbioh man has beooma so intimately
acquainted during tba last quarter of a
century, and yet knowa BO little of, doubt-
1 as hsa much to |do with the phenom
ena ot water-aponta. The heavens ware
bri liunt with inoaanant flashes of light
mug after theapoat deaeribsd above had
disappeared. Thera waa no rushing noi-e
eonbeiMd with it, at ia the ease in tame
ii a ances. The water underneath the
clouds just before the spout formed was
s eta of great agitation. Waves
angrily and a peroeptible bulge was
As the cloud baited, a sort of fan-
nel protruded from it and dropped slowly
down, baoomiog larger aa it lengthened—
the broader por'iou or base being at the
surface of the cloud. When it reaohed a
point about one-fourth the distance be
tween the olond and the pond, the bulge
on the aurfsoe of the letter rose to meet
and the two at length joined, when
i water from the pond commenced
endiDg iuto the olond, which moved
owly toward the trestle-work. The
aver in the water—all leaping and tend
- towards the spout—and the spont it-
continued the vortical motion rafer-
lo above. The outside of the watenr
nnel was dark and not well-defined,
ile the centre was inaoh lighter, being
tber of a blnish oast. This would a-em
indieate that the eolnmn waa partly
’low, the dark portions representing
aides. The e can be no doubt but
t the immeuae quantity ot water which
tMa transferred from tba pond to the
•nail mm literally sacked np.
. The spout Anally disappeared, aa it it
had been drawn np Iioai into the olonde,
while the Utter quiAu .moved olf to
5 arts unknown. Not aH » of rain fell
tiring the occurrence flWHvwards. The
formation and auhiteqm j| motions of
the spout are described^* having made
up a apeotacle grand in the extreme.
Nothing of the find waa ever before
seen iu that seotion. The strangest part
of tba phenomenon waa the feet that, tba
olond, so burdened with water, moved off
without dispensing any of it in the form
of rain in the neighborhood.
sous niuutne nooi
The following interesting statement
waa furnished to ns by a'gentleman who
requested Ur. Wm. Philips, Civil Engin
eer, to make the oelooUtion:
Area of mill pond, GOO uores; depth of
water diminished, two inobea by a water
spout which prevailed for about tan min
utes. The superficial area of ona aore is
43,ildo square feet; the decimal for the
depth of 8 inobee ia 0.1866 of a foot;
baooe 43,560x0.16—6966.60 eobio feet is
the quantify taken from ona aore—and
theu 6069.60x600 gives ua 4,181,760 oubic
feet, aa the whole quantity taken from the
mill pond. Tbe cube root of thia last ia
about 161 feat, so a ooba of that siae
would nearly measure the quantity of
water taken off. Thia quantity would
make a oolumn ten feet diameter 53,843
Sot high—ra.ber more than ten miles.
Jpiidj Iba. to a cubio foot, the above
4,181,760 eobio fast would weigh 861,-
860,000 pounds. .
