ANOTHER REPORT FROM GEN.
CUTER.
HRADQ’ns Black Hills Expedition, >
Bear Butte, Dak., August 15. f
To AwUtant Adjutant General Depart
ment of Dakota, St. Paul:
My last dispatch was written on the 2d
and 3d instant, and sent from the south
fork of the Cheyenne, from a point on
the latter nearest to Fott Laramie. On
the morning of the 4th instant 1 began
,y return march to our main camp near
aruey’s Peak, arriving there by a differ-
it route in the 6th. On the morning of
[6 7th the expedition began i s am oh
•rthwurd, Bear Bntte being our next ob-
itive point. Wo advanced without so
us uiistucle until within ten or twelve
nes of bear Butte, when wo found our
ther progiess barred by a high ritnge
impassable hills. We attempted to
Feet a pass ige through some one of the
r y valleys where water-couraes ran
ctly through the hills in the de.-irtd
Affection, but in every instance we were
lfd into deep, broken canyons impassable
•Teu to horsemen. Through one of these
I made u>y wttyou foot Lorn a high poiur,
add obt iued a view of the plaius outside.
Batracing my steps, I plaoed the command
ia camp in a flue valley in whic i
it . had halted, and converted the
Vem&'uder of the day to a further
March for a practical routo through
the Hills. The result deoided me to tul-
:Idw down a water-course which led ns
first towards the south and afterwards
towards th* east. This stream proved to
be Elk Creek, the valley of which, as well
as the stream itself, proved to be at leu-t
equal in beauty and extent to any passed
thiough dunug the march. We camp d
t*ic* un this steam, and as far ns we pro
ceeded down its course we had a most
excel.eut rood; but fiuding that like near
iy all other s reams leaving the hills, its
course would take ns iuto a canyon wLmh
could bo barely made practicable for wag
ons, 1 searched tor and discovered a nur-
row gap iu the rocky wall, which forms
he northern boundary of the valley, and
yhieh was 1 irgo enough to allow our wag
ms to pass conveniently through. A
irch of nu hour up a gradual ascent and
rough a pine forest brought us to a
ruutrful park, containing thousands of
res, from which we obtained a fine
>ew in the distance of our old acquaint
ice, “the Plains.” Here we pitched out
nts for the last timo in the black Hills,
arly every one being loath to leaven
giou which had been found delightful
almost every respect. Behind us the
ass and foliage was clothed iu green of
is freshness of May. In front of ns wo
it eyes over the plains; below wo saw
dung bat a comparatively parched, ;
led surface, the sunburnt pasturage of
ioh offered a most uninviting prospect !
th fur horses and rider wheu reuieui-
iring the rich abundance we were loav-
g behind us.
A march of twenty.six miles gradually
ring northwards brought us lo the
ir Butio, ut which poiut I concluded to
imsiu on j day beloro btginuing our re-
irn march. I propo-od to return by »
ifferent, abhough perhaps not snorter,
iut=» than that adopted iu coming to the
1 .os lliils, I urn induced to make this
isuge in order to embrace a large tract
nu explored country within the limits
our ixploratious, and particu urly to
ibJe us to locate as-much as possible of
A portion of this Little Mis onri, of
Ich nothing is known. I expect the
ledition to reach Fort Lincoln about the
tt of August. The health of the coin-
id has bean and is most exoelleut.
lis expedition entered the Black Hills
toe west side, passed through the
feru and most southern ranges, ex-
•ed the major portion of the interior,
passed out of the most eastern
;es, which form the boundary of the
ik Hills. From the fact that in a 1
principal marches through the Black
is we have takeu without serious ch
ile a heavily laden train of over one
idred wagons, it may be inferred that
Black Hills do not constitute the itn-
ettahie region het etofore represented,
entering the Black Hil.s from nuy
ioiion the most serious if not the only
taole we encountered at onoe near the
iter base. This probably accounts for
i story which has so l~>ng existed re*
ding the character of the interior,
iplonng parties htve contented theiu-
ives with marching around the exterior
> hills, as viewed at a distance, iulerred
hat an advuuoe towards the interior
Roald only euoounter iuoreased obstacles.
"n regard to the character of the count iy
aulosed by the Black Hills I can on y re
eat what I have stated .in previous des-
atches. No portion of the United States
eu boast of a richer or better pasturage
' purer wator, the natural temperature
! which in midsummer, as it flows from
eurih, is twelve degrees above the
•Ring point, and of gteater advantages
itraiiy to the farmer or stock-rai->er
Eu uve to be found elsewhore. In the
,»l; Hills building stone ia found in in-
Rustuble quantities, aud wood, fuel
plumber sufficient for all time to come.
i are frequent, with no evidence of
br drought or freshets. The days are
■ttfcaps too short and the nights too cool
fer^eorn, but I believe all other grain
•Mid be produced here in abundauce.
WfiAet particularly would yield largely.
IBsre is no doubt an to the existence of
•titans metals throughout the hills. As
’ tfcfe subject has received the spociul
•BtOtion of experts who accompanied
tfcf expjdition and will be reported
•pou in detail, I will only mention
(M fact that iron and plumbago have
been found ami bods of gypsum of ap
parently inexhaustible extent. 1 referred
Util former dispatch to ttm discovery of
«Od. {Subsequent examinations at num
erous points confirm aud ft lengthen the
feat ot the ex stenco of gold in the Black
Hills. Iu some of the water courses, al
most every paufull of eurth produced gold
in small yet paying quantities. Our brief
halts and rapid matching prevented any
thing but a very hasty elimination of the
dry in this respect, but in one place,
the only one within my knowledge
*e ao grout a depth was reached, a
was dug eight feet in depth, and the
s report that they found gold among
lots of the grass, and from that point
I lowest poiut reached gold was found
jring qu intities. It has not reqnirod
ipert to find gold in the Black Hills,
M man without former experience in miu-
ive discovered it at an expense of but
lime or labor. As an evidence of
job pasturage to be found in this re-
£ oan state the fact that my beef herd,
“ —Arching upwards of six huudred
s in butter condition than when I
being now as fat aa consistent
arching condition. The sumo may
' of the mules of the wagon train,
rse* of the command are in good
tg eoudition. I have never seen hr
msoy deer as in the Blaok Hills. Elk and
tMur have also been killed. We have had
Miollision with hostile Indians.
