All the counties have now been hesrd
from in this Congreasional District. The
Convention for the nomination of a can
did .to for Congress by the Democratic
party meets at Newnan on September 9th.
No one candidate ha* enough vote* to
elect ou the first ballot. No one would
be tnnnb surprised if a nominee was not
elected whose name lias not yet beeu an
nounced so very f romiuently for the posi
tion, and yet be a very distinguished
man. Troup, Meriwether, Heard, Doug
lass and Carroll counties have instructed
their delegates to vote for Hon. Hoory
R. Harris. Troup an 1 Meriwether are
ent tied to four votes each, and Ueard,
Douglass and Carroll two eaoh—making
fourteen votes on the first ballot for
Harris.
T dbot county has instructed her four
delegates to vote for J. F. Pou, Judge of
Muse ’ge* County Court. Mu-cogee,
entitled to four votes, send* her delegates
uninKtriioted. As tht Pou ticket was
obosen, of course they will vote for him
on the flrat ballot, which gives him eight
vote*. How the Muscogeeans vote on
the first or any other ballot is as they
may choose.
Campbell’s two votes and Coweta’s
four go by instructions for Judge Bu
chanan.
Hsrris county has instructed her four
delegate i to vote for Col. Mobley.
Chattahoochee sends her two delegates
entirely untrainoled. They, like tho Mus
cogee delegation, vote as they will. For
whom, as a candidate, they will ballot,
we have not been able to loarn.
Marion county, entitled to four dele
gates, goes for Col. M. II. Biandford.
The convention will then bo composed
of for»y-four votes. If the two-thirds
rule is adopted twenty-nine and one-third
vote* Will be required to elect. Thero is
much speculation as to the result.
jfi Raault of a Boy's Ubaervatfon.
A Columbus lad, son of Mr. Frazer has
beci roaming arjund North Georgia a*
be pleases. Being quite shrewd aud ob
serving, he formed some very accurate im
pression*. To show the idea whioh i*
conveyed to a hoy we quote the substance
of bis comparisons of Atlautu and Co
lumbus. Ho i-uys in Atlanta people look
cheerful and happy. There is an air of
bu-tlo and activity. In Columbus per
sons wu k slow nud look depressed. The
towu has n dull, listless appearance.
When a merchant asks another in Atlauta
bow he i* doing, lie receives the brisk,
cheery reply—g itting along finely, a* well
us could be expocted, and talks brightly
»nd hopefully, and then the party hurries
on. Iu Columbus, the querist rooeives
an auswer iu a doleful tone, that nothiug is
doing, times are torrible mid the con versa
tiou pokes on in a dreamy, melancholy
tone ou dullness of tho period and tho
difficulty of gotting money, and when the
two are through one moves sadly off,
seemingly the epitome of woo. #

Officer James Robsrts, of the foroe,
wm suspended yesterday for being Intoxi
cated twice in succession. We hope he
will be at once rasiored, because he ex*
cells, as a detective, and makes an active,
intelligent, industrious officer—one of the
very best on the force. Home allowance*
should be made hamanity when success
has crowned bis efforts, and those of
others, in working up a case which led to
the arrest of a notorious bnrglar nud
probable murderer.
Officers Feagin and Palmer arrested two
negroes Wednesday night who had been
stealing meat. Officer Bt. Clair arrested
another for stealing corn in the country.
Offier W. Wood took in tow a white per
son who gave his name as Isaiah Thomas,
of Troup. He had a horse which is sus
pected to be stolen. He promised to
make his appearance yesterday morning
but baa failed to do so. The officer has
the animal.
Roll Worm Near Columbue.
Mr. Q. Y. Banks, of the Lowell Ware*
honae, sent to the office quite a number
of young bolls of cotton which tho worm
had bored into and destroyed the fibre.
They are going rapidly for tho young cot
ton as it has boiled. We have made dili
gent enquiries and are satisfied that these
worms are confined to limited localities.
They may spread rapidly, however. There
were more oomplaints of this worm last
year at this date than there is now*.
Attempted Suicide, and All /or Love.
Up town, yesterday, a young man at
tempted auieide by swallowing a half
pbial of laudanum. A friend saw tho
operation, and taking him in charge,
walked him vigorously for two or three
hours. After thia treatment, aud subse
quent vomiting, the self-poisoner was all
right. Cause—the usual one—disappoint

Wednesday night a colored tuau, who had
bccH long iu his employ, asked Mr. G. to
loud him his gun, aud he would wutch for
the thiof. This was done, and the sontinel
posted himself. Iu a short time the thief
appetred and was arrested. He is a color
ed black-m th at the well known Nauce's
shop, 'ihe sentinel started to the house
with his prisouer, and had gone quietly a
short distance, when the latter turned
suddenly, grabbing the gun from the sen-
tinel aud commenced beating hint over
the head with the weapon, and loft him
for dead. The beaton man is considered
in a very daugerous condition, with tho
chances of recovery against him. Ho was
able to tell who his assailant wus. and he
has been arroBted.
Round Over.
Mr. Robert Forsyth, of Girard, who
shot a negro man a few days since, as
heretofore reported in our columns, was
arrested yesterday by tho Sheriff of Rus
sell county. He weut before a Magistrate,
waived au examination, aud gave bond in
the sum of $1,000 to appear at court and
answer tho charge. According to reports
in circulation, they had a dispute about
the orop ; the negro knocked Mr. Forsyth
down, and the latter ou rising shot tho
negro in the forehead, tho ball, somovrhat
flattened by tbe concussion, running round
under the scalp to tho back part of the
head, without penetrating the skull. Of
course tho damage was not very sorious.
