The Julia St.Clair arrived yesterday
with tweuty four b dos of cotton, it
little other frcig it and several passengers.
A boat loav»s this morning at 8 o’clock.
The down river freights are now pretty
heavy.

Mfj »r A. R. Calhoun returned from
the Warm Springs yesterday.
Dr. G. J. Kirkscey is in the city on a
Visit.
More Now Cotton.
Six more bales wore received yesterday
—one from Jackson county, Florida, and
five from Decatur county, Alabama. This
makes thirty-throe bales thus far received.
VParm Springt.
A gentleman just from the Warm
Springs reports tnia charming watering
place well a tended. '1 ho crops between
buio and thero are said to be HplendiJ.
N.groea were iu the Helds picking cotton.
QuoCo.
The afternoons being extremely quiet,
a quoit club has been urg mixed of prom
ineut f rmers, mer hants sud cotton buy
ers. They go it heavily for hours at a
time. A prizo is to be awarded to the
victor of iho party. The game tries one’s
mueolo, and tho devotees of the soiouou
say it is better intellectually than doing
nothiug.
ALABAMA RADICAL GREASERS.
Robhory of Tax-Fay or § North and South,
by Comgre.tr, to Carry Alabama
Rite i ionr—Governor Ltwit
Ntedt Watching.
Despite tho fset that Gov. Lewis, of
Alabama, stated that the distribution of
bac >n, robbed from the tax payers of tho
entire United States, by a Radical Con
gress, would be stopped in the Third Dis
trict of Alabama, we saw two casks of
it con-igned to W. II. Betts, Seale, Rus
sell county, Ala , at tho depot yesterday.
It was shipped from Opelika by W. II.
Betts, Government Agent, for distribu
tion.
As we have often stated, there was no
overflow in that Dis'ric, and none in the
State of Alabama, except on the Bigbee
and Warrior rivers, and that hsppened
long ago. This is one of the Radical
tricks to catch vote*, and we have no doubt
but that Gov. Lewis has made his state
ment iu order to keep uny white Demo
crats fr »m putting in a claim, so that the
bacon might be held uutil November next,
and the blacks through the S ate be noti
fied that the distiihution will take place
on election day. By thin moans not only
the entire neg o population of Alabama,
but a large addition of Georgia darkle*,
would be promptly at tbe polls, to sling
Republ can votes and “git de pervis.ons
of d tt ar silver bill. '
We do 111 nk, however, that Russell
county, with her 16.000 negroes and 5,000
whites, is entitled to more than two casks
of baoon. As the whites will not get
•« sufficient quantity of tbe bacon to
greaso a band-saw, we would arivise
tho “ca lud bredren” of Russell to inves
tigate the matter, as that is the largest
uegro county in the dislriot, and see that
the delegates to tho Congressional Con
vention of the Radical party do not got
all the meat.
Would it not be well for the Democratic
Executive Committee of tho Third Dis
trict to sue out a wiit of injunction and
havo this d stribution of stolen meat
stopped, on the ground that it belongs to
other per'ions of Alubjtnu which wore ac
tually overflowed?
Candidates on the Democratic ticket in
tho Third Distrl t would do well to watch
tho distiibutors, and seo that thoy do not
“put it where it will do tho most good"
for tho Radicals.
LOCAL BRIEFS.
That Hurtville dentation.
Wo havo obtained from a gentleman
some particulars of the causes which pro
duced the late oxcitomout in Hurtvide,
Russell county, Ala., a station on tho M.
A G. It. It., thirty five rnilos below Co
lumbus. The uogroes, several hundred
in number, bad hold a meeting at uight.
The bunion of tho speeches was “d—n
the Democrats I kill one whorever he can
bo found; a negro who voted for thorn
deserved death, and would get his de-
sortH,” nnd similnr ineondiary language.
They threatened to rob aud burn the
lace, and kill women and childreu, and
to put an end to all that opposed them,
the crowd, ex.ited l>y Mich harauguos,
became a mad, turbulent mob. The
majority of tbe whites were at church.
Hearing reports of this character from
reliab.'o bearers, they hurried home and
thu men arrnod themselves. The negroei
at that time had ssseinhlcd iu tho open
air, aud thirty or forty pistol shots were
fire 1 by them. Tho whites, hearing the
reports, came rushing in fioiu all quar
t r<, and the negroes scattered like sheep.
The affair was then endod. There has
been no disturbance sinoe, though tho
whites aro constantly ou their guard.
Our Congrettional Dittriet.
Through a misapprehension we made
two counties have too many votes. The
total numbor is 38. Ar tbe slate standa,
Harris will have 16 on first ballot—Troup,
4 ; Meriwether, 4 ; Heard, 2 ; Carroll, 4 ;
Dougla-a, 2. Pou 8—Talbot, 4; Musco
gee, 4. Buchanan 6—Campbell, 2; Cow
eta. 4. Mo* ley 4—Hurris. Bland ford 2
—Marion. Chattahoochee 2, uninsirueted,
aud so ia Muscogee. Under the two-thirds
rule 2. r >£ votes will elect; so there is plen
ty of room for joggling.
Tito Texan Ftvtr.
It is said that about a dozen young m n n
of Goluiuhus o ntemp'a'e go ug to Texas
and Sh eveport, La , next mouth or tbe
oue ihereafter. One thing ia certain,
many now iu Tex is would gladly return
to their formor homes hid they the money.
All business pod' ions are now overstocked
We know of those now in that country
who have beeu compelled to aocept tho
very lowost positions—d ting meuial ser
vice in order to get bread. Tho only per.
bods who cad succeed in Texas aro mem
bers of the farming class who are williug
to work hard, keep away for years from
theritto^ unless necessity cull* them there,
an l those who, without murmuring, onu
endure rnauy privations. Texas is no El
Dorado where fortunes can bo made in a
few months.

The young people of Villula, Russell
county, Ala , aro getting up au entertain
ment for next Thursday evening, Septem

drama, charades and tableaux, aud tho
selections made give the assurance that
the fair and gallant amateurs will afford
on tho occasion au entertainment rarely

—Tbs Mayor yesterday fined John Ram
sey ousts.
—This year has been a very bad one for
good men.
—Freight arrivals a^e becoming very
large, and daily increasing.
—Daylight is shortening at the rate of
two minutes per diem.
—A little girl remarked of an ill-tem«
pered chap: “Ho hasn't a single laugh in
bis face.”
—The genial collector now warbles tho
entire day long his favorite ditty, cunvoti-
set lethallittlebill. Of course it can’t be.
—Some women get up a reputation for
amiability by taking a little boy into the
omnibus with them and make him give
bis seat “to tho gentleman." It means
business.
—The Atlanta and West Point Railroad
charges forty cents to carry a 400 pound
barrel of vinegar to West Point, and
five dollars to carry a passenger, though
he d m't weigh one hhudred pounds. Dis
tance cigbty-oight miles. Passenger rate
about six cents a rni.o.
—The thermometer, for tho week end
ing last night, ha* averaged eighty-one
degrees, and the rain fall forty five hun
dredths of an inch.
—The negro b acksmith and corn thief
who so badly injured a colored watchman,
Wednesday night, at the G1 nu plaoe, six
miles from Columbus, was yesterday lodged
in jail by Sheriff Ivey.
—The general talk now in that Mr. Jake
G. Burras will be run by his hosts of
frieuds for Tax Collector. lie will make
a splendid aud trustworthy officer.
—Fall weather coutinuos. Cl >udy, with
good breezes from the east. Mosquitoes
have not been diminished.
—Twenty-four wagons were packed in
that Illinois Central oar which reached
here a few days ago.
—Over a huudrod Democratic babies
havo been born in Columbus this mouth.
Aa a matter of rejoicing, we may mention
that the majority are boys.
—We have noted the anival of the flr>t
bale of new cotton from Midway, Ala. It
was from tbe plunUtion of Mr. M. Run
sell, in Barbour county, soveu miles from
Midway, clashed good ordinary, and was
bought by Charles Newuiau A Co., at auc
tion, for 15c. per pound.
—The Central Railroad proposes that if
twenty or thirty of those holding those
round trip Kennesaw tickets choose to go
to Atlanta, a special oar will be provided
for them, and run so as to make clos
connection. Thin will bo done simply for
accommodation.
-A reunion of tho officers and men of
Henning's Brigade is talked of, but no
mention of time is made. The subject is
being discussed very generally by the
surviving mouthers, and the occasion
wonld be oue of great interest.
