Wo have lieen askod repeatedly what
would be the effect of the exmtestod elec
tion. We cannot form or express an opin
ion ah to which of the two will be declared!
clactod, and the question has notlnxm pro*
pounded to ascertain that fact, but to loam
the modus ofu ratuU of a contest. The first
thing on the programme is the noti
fication to the Governor of the
contest. This notice must l>e given in be
fore t henuui against whom the contest
Is made receives his commission. The
law requires that within thirty days after
the election tlie oontestant shall give writ
ten notice to the other side of the contest
and the grounds upon which the Issue is
raised. The Governor appoints a com
mission to determine the matter and re
vise the votes. Before this commission
both parties appear and submit their evi
dence ae to fraud, or other illegalities of
which they complain. This board then
sends the evidence to the Governor, and
from tfiat he declares who is elected.
In the present, case, the charge Is that
five hundmi votes were cast by men who
did not pay their txoes. This is the chief
ground of contest. As soon as tin* list of
voters is returned from Atlanta, they will
give the necessary notice und examine
witnesses. In no event will there be an
other election. Tin* law settles the matter
by a revision of the ballot box, and upon
•evidence. It does not provide for u new
election, nor can the* Governor order one.
The race has been run, and from the can
didates must come the officeholder.
Then this contest Isa matter in which
the public* has no interest, further than
their respective interest in the success of
one or the other of the candidates—Mr. An
drews or Mr. Burr us.

Our suggestions to raise funds to build j
a monument to our heroic dead, has inet 1
with general approbation. From sev
eral ladies we liave received letters and
liotou approving the plan of a tournament
and a prize drill. We understand the ()c
--luinbus Guards will give a grand hall on
the night of the day of the tournament
and prize* drill, and donate the proceeds to
tlm monumeiital fund. They propose to
join the City Light Guards In an Invita
tion to the military companies of Atlanta,
Macon, LaGntnge, Albany, Montgomery,
West Point and other places, to contest
for a prize, then invite all of the compa
ny** present to their military hell. It will
Im* a grand affair, and we hops the ladies
will move in the* matter by selecting a
day, that everybody may make prepara
tions to attend. We suggest that the
Indies of the Memorial Association Helect
a day early in the spring, and advertise
tin* programme, Ac.
Independent of securing the fund to
build a monument, it will be a pleasant
affair. Atlanta has lioun built up by fre
quent, conventions, and making it general
headquarters for conventions, committee
meetings, Ac. Let us take hold of the
matter In earnest, and make a grand suc
cess of it.

Our reß|Mx*tod contempory, tin* En

a dispatch purporting to corns from Atlan
ta, announcing that the Legislature did
not organize on Wednesday, while in this
pup(*r was published a special dispatch,
stating the ixxly had organlzed.and gave
a list of officers elected. A number of citi
zens asked us which was right. We knew
we were right, for our Atlanta letter con
firms our special telegram. We cannot
account for It, but presume the special for
the Enquirer was lost or mislaid, or maybe
their special correspondent “Muscogee,”
left there about the time of the organiza
tion, or a little before. To be enterprising
is very g<x)d, but there 1h such a thing as
overdoing a thing.

There were two cases befon* his Honor, j
