gentleman from whom we received mirfn
fonnatlon Is temporarily absent, hence
we cannot answer for him any further
titan to stub; that what he has first told
us we. believe to be true. The local item
that conveyod that intelligent*! to
the people, contained nothing offen
sive, but simply stated that about
ten thousand dollars was expended
for an old hulk of a steamer, when the
Central line of bouts had offered a boat to
the Government free of charge'; and bli
ther, that the Jetty had floated off. We
made no assertion of fraud on anyone,
nor did tlic gentleman who gave us the
information. There is no question but
that the boat was tendered the Govern
ment. Why was the offer not accepted?
If it had, would not there have boon that ;
much more money to expend on the river?!
j From the statement in the Enquirer of ex
j ponses, the sum is much less than our i
author’s estimate, but does that estimate
cover all charges?
For purchase Clara .^ooo
For repairs on Clara. ..... A r,o()
Coming from Mobile 1,500
This makes the sum of six thousand dol
lars. To this add:
Laying days
Hauling out ~ 350 i
This makes seven thousand dollars,!
and wo are informed that instead
of $2,500 paid for repairs, that it was
five thousand. This serves the argument
wo made, that the money was expended to J
a largo sum for an old boat, after we had *
boon offered one free.
The cause of the warlike epistle arums i
to have arisen because a gentleman lias
dared to assert that the jetty is gone, j
Well, we think that if tho jetty is gone, or
any part of it, that a man has a right to j
express himself to that effect without
being called “a liar, and a brainless idiot.” ,
The gentleman who gave us the informa
lion has ample facilities for knowing
whereof he speaks, and he is not an idiot, i
From the stir In this matter it seems!
somebody is a little tender-footed. Now,
we made an effort to got at more definite
information than we first had, and our
sixvreh has led us upon another gentle
man who says that a part of the jetty is
gone.
We are not opposed In anyway to the
improvement of the river, and hope that
Congress will make a large appropriation
to clean out the entire river. The people
have a right to know what is going on
down the river, and whenever we have
reliable information concerning tho work,
wo shall give it to the public.
