came near Ixilng burnt. The stove pipe
rune through the ceiling, and on becom
ing very hot the wood between the ceiling

Funeral of Mr. James Emils.
The funeral wrvioes of the late Mr. Jas.
Ennis took place at his residence in Boall
wood yesterday aftorix>n at half-past 2
o'clock. A large nuintmr Of the friends of
the deceased were in attendance. Rev. J.
O. Branch officiated. He read the 90th
Psalm, and offered an earnest, and touch*
iug prayer. Hie regular burial service of
the Methodist.CnifiVn was reou. The body
was then carried to the city cemetery,
where quite a number of the citizens had
assembled. A good aud useful man has
passed away, and the community will
miss him.

Another Fire.
The Cottage MilK rfttnatoH 'near the
Southwestern depot, came near boing de
stroyed by fire on Wednesday night. A
negro who sleeps in the mill wont to sleep
on a mattress near the fire. He was soon
aroused by a bright light and a feeling of
unusual warmth. The bod had caught on
fire and was burning in a hurry. The
mattress was thrown out of the window,
and the building thus saved.

Wo were pleased to welcome to our,
sanctum on yesterday Mr. R. A. Daniel, |
who formerly lived in this city. He is !
now traveling for Post A. Hobby,
one of the largest wholesale grocery
houses in New Orleans. Uc has not
changed a ! great dekf since ms removal
from Columbus, but looks somewhat more
s<*date and dignified. Bob lias a perfect
host of friends in these parts, and will
always find a hearty welcome among
them. He reports that New Orleans is
somewhat more quiet than it was in Sep
tember last, but not yet altogether serene.

Potieeman Smith returned from his
search after the follow that stole Mr. Geo.
Whitten’s meat, at a lab' hour Wednesday
night. Ho did not suc<*oed In capturing
his prey, but obtained Some clue as to his
whereabouts. After the meat was stolen
from the smoke house and the horse and
wagon t#ken to carry it away, tlie thief
was: carrying it through Mr. Uidenhour’a
plantation, when that gentleman got on
track of him and pursued htm so closely
that he iejt the meat, wagon and all, and

Mr. Whitten has his suspicions as to
who the guilty party is, but is hooping all
quiet for the present. He is very lucky to

ceeds in capturing the man who stole it he

The Contested Flection.
The everlasting examination of the bal
lot-box was continued on yesterday, and
about the same routine of business trans
acted. About seventy-four suspected bal
lots were taken out, Sixty-two of these
were cast for Burr us. eleven for Klink and
one for Andrews.
Quite a number of voters, whose rigid of
easting a ballot at the late election had
been brought Into question, w ere exam
ined, and we believe all of them asserted
their right of suffrage.
The examination will bo concluded on
Saturday. Very little more evidence re
mains tono taken. The cast' will I*' laid
beforetße Governor on Monday.

We heard last night that an operative in
the Eagle ami Phcnix factory, while work
ing nt his cqrdp yesterday afternoon, was
a little eareltjfe ami put his right hand too
near the machinery, in which it was
caught. The flesh was badly torn, and
the thumb s<? completely lacerated as to
render its amputation necessary. The op
eration was successfully performed by Dr.
Terry. The wounded man is said to be
suffering very much.
The factory was closed when we hoard
the above facts, and we could not ascertain
his name.
