Tli* (Dum of Cotton.
Tho following, front the New York
Bulletin of tho 97th, will be of interest
to our commercial readers:
The operations on tho market du
ring the past week have been largely
of a speculative character, witli the
turn rather upward, audit further
advance in value in some eases estab
lished, but a nervous and undecided
sort of feeling was apparent, and no
really new points developed calcula
ted to give either "bulls"or "beats”
a decided or permanent advantage.
With the receipts at the ports again
running light, tho mail advices from
tho South and the general statistical
l>osltion Indicating little or no in
crease during the coming week, Liv
erpool at one time seeming to bo
starting into greuter life, and n little
more interest shown here by export
ers, while holders, as before, retained
a firm grip on their supply in store,
and refused to offer except at extreme
figures, it was not difficult to sustain
tin* position, and with any Increase
of demand sellers could occasionally
gain a fractional advance. Another
sustaining point was the covering of
a great many maturing April con
tracts, and extension of the same into
later months, leading to an impres
sion that the deliveries on notices
would prove moderate. On the other
hand, however, there was the same
indisposition to invest heavily at rul
ing rates, to which we have before
referred, especially after the foreign
markets failed to fulfil tho promises
of the early iK'sitiou of the week, and
though a great many small purchases
were undoubtedly made in expecta
tion of quick turn and light profit,
the larger operators adhered to a cau
tious conservative policy and rather
held aloof. f*Shipl>ers, too, did not
reach actual purchases of sufficient
magnitude to afford any relief, the
stocks were rather on the increase,
and a belief was entertained that the
offerings on April notices were un
der-estimated. The latter theory was
proven to be well founded on Thurs
day, when the issue of notices
under tho rule became admis
sible, the offering reaching in the
neighborhood of ten thousand
iiales. This naturally hud a soften
ing iiiHuonco, and though the notices
were all taken care of and the break
in values did not prove serious, the
tone was barely steady when the Ex
change adjourned over for the Easier
holidays Taken altogether, the teel-
iug outside the few extremists seems
to favor much caution until a heal
thier outward movement of actual
cotton takes place, with a leaning
toward the opinion that the economic
feelings of consumers will act ad
versely to any further Important ad
dition to values.
On “snots" the week opened with
favorable indication, Liverpool com
ing better and exporters chopping
around considerably. Holders, how
ever, wore so very stiff in their views,
both here and at the South, as to al
most entirely shut off margins on
purchases for foreign account, spin
ners failing to take more than their
average orders, and it being hinted
that some of tin* sales credited to le
gitimate outlets were in reality to be
used simply for speculative purposes,
business became dull and values a
little nominal. There was no posi
tive reaction, and owners in many
cases were insisting upon Sal more
than official quotations for strictly
graded lots, but concessions would
have been necessary in order to re
i aline.
On futures the principal features
have been the preservation of a good
[ strong tone on the late months, and
ft he irregularity on near-by maturing
, contracts. Beyond ,1 uly business was
limited, operators seeming satisfied
to surrender that portion of the year
and concentrate their energies upon
the three months this side. At first
the operations were based upon an
tieipations of an upward turn.asmall
offering of notices being calculated
u[>on, and with some of the principal
[dealers apparently extending into
May and June, and taking tin* fair
margin offered, a great many small
operators were drawn in. hopeful of
making a little turn, tin Thursday,
when the April notices came out m
immense quantities, these small op
erators commenced selling out, and
i contributed somewhat to the weak
ness; Inil tin' manner in which the
[ "bull” Interest rallied to tin* rescue
prevented any seri ms shrinkage, tin*
market closing fairly steady. The
effect of the notiara, however, it was
thought, scarcely developed to the
full extent, and resumption of busi
ness on Monday is looked forward to
with much interest.
