All Fool*’ llu>.
The first of April ptused with a degrun |
of dullness and quiet which should never
be allowed to exiat on so grout an ocoa-1
sion. Tills day has been dedicated by im- ■
memo rial custom to a very largo portion
| of the human family, and In token of this
‘ distinction it has received the very expres-
sive title of “All Fools’ Day.” Whether
or not those who gave the appellation in
tended it as a day on which this unfortu
nate class shall have unbounded privi
leges and hold*a high carnival of mirth
and fun, we are unable to say. Though
the title of the day seems to vest an abso
lute and indisputable proprietory right in
a Certain division of the human family,
this ownership seems to have suffered
from the encroachments of those who
have no interest whatever in it. Every
body plots and plans pranks on his neigh
i bur, and the more complete the deception,
j the more unfortunate the victim, why,
the greater the fun. On this day every
individual is u most veritable Ishmaolite;
he is plotting to deceive and ridicule every
lxxty else, ami the same parties entertain
similar intentions concerning him. Many
I and varied are the jokes to which these
attempts invariably give rise. Home of
the very finest, instances of human strate
gy m ever recorded, have ln*on exhibited in
the arduous endeavors of some fun-loving
wag to doeolvo and annoy unsuspecting
soix>rness. There werned to be very few
of these troublesome fellows in the city
yesterday. A man felt comparatively
safe while walking on the street, and en
joyed a freedom from all suspicions of
! tricks and jokes, whose terrors he might
| at any moment, feel.

of those who passed eagerly seized a fan
cied treasure. Some examined the con
tents on the spot, but many carried the
precious package home, keeping it hid all
the time from tlie prying eyes of inquisi
tive, by-standees, and after much prepara
tion earefufly undid the tightly sealed
and neatly wrapped box to discover that,
they had boon tenderly carrying half a
pound of sand.
A merchant who loves fun as well as he
does trade, forgot all about dull times in
I his various pranks. He sent eighteen

nounced- Notwithstanding this a very
large crowd gathered in and around the
court-house about that hour. All seemed
anxious to hear the evidence and sec what
was going on.
Judge Johnson took the stand and tu
nouncod that he had understood that
tain parties charged with a violation of
the law were to lx* brought before him for
a preliminary examination, and until o

Judge Johnson said that if the case came
up yesterday or to-day, he could preside,
but as he Intended to leave for Tuvlor Su-!

after.
Hon. T. W. Grimes proposed, ou the part j
of the defence, that the preliminary exam-.
