TUo wliolo country will rejoice that
the Comptroller General ha-s ordartx!
the postponement for thirty days
longer, of the sale of the real probi
ty which is in default of taxes.
It is to bo hoped that the owners
will now heed the warning in season,
and come forward and save their pos
sessions, by the payment of all dues,
ere it bo too late, JJut in any event
it will be most unwise to push the
sale of theso lands in tho present do
iiressed condition of financial affairs,
f persisted in, the State will rue the
stop hereafter, in tho permanent re
duction of her revenues.
A laud agent of much cxi>orionce
and information, estimates that the
wildlands will not sell higher thnn
from #li) to #SO per lot of 490 acres.
And mark the result. These prices
will Jim the basis in future for all sub
sequent returns. If A has paid
taxes upon pine laud adjoining the
possessions of li, at #2 no per acre,
and the property of the latter, though
not a whit the loss valuable, is dis
posed of at government sale for only
ten cents per acre, then next year, A
will adopt the same standard in as
sessing the value ot his lands for the |
tax receiver, and that official will be
forced to admit the justice of the re
turn, as predicated upon actual mar
ket rates. And moreover, the same
estimates will be apt to obtain uni
versally throughout the State for
lands of similar grade.
It is thus easy to see that witli a
largely decreased schedule of taxable
values caused by this short-sighted
policy, either dlminisla'ii revenue, or
a higher rate of tuxes must tie tho con
sequence. But for tHo latter the peo
ple are not prepared, nor will they
acquiesce in the justice or propriety
of the step when they learn the why
and wherefore relating to the matter.
We trust, then, that tho State, if
she persists in putting these lauds
upon the block at this trying junc
ture, will hiit them in and halt/ than as
security for the taxes in arrears, un
til such time as the owners may pay
off all encumbrances, and redeem
them, with the accruing costs. Of
course, some reasonable limit to tho
time for this redemption should be I
assigned. Just now. to Juror, a sale is ;
simply ruinous to all concerned.
To show how the eagles are scent
ing their prey from afar, one promi- j
neat New Turk tirm who were uego-,
tinting for the purchase of fifty thou
smut acres of timber land, at a given
price, as soon as it transpired that
three motions of acres of Georgia land
were to be knocked off summarily at I
auction, upon a very short notice, im
mediately ilissulced the agreement,
and declared that they preferred to,
enter the market as buyers when
theso lauds were certain of securing
bettor bargains. Comment is unnec
essary,

Messrs. Editors: I saw, a few days
ago, an account of sales of two bales
ot cotton made by Mr. W. W. Khodes,
Superintendent of the Grange Ware
house in Augusta, which, for tho re
markable charges. 1 simply wish to
call the attention of the planting l
public.
Tho two bales alluded to belonged!
to a lady in this county, and weighed j
at her gin-house by Fairbanks’stand
ard, 4G5 lbs. and 479 lbs. They were
shipped on Friday, sold on tlio fol
lowing Monday, one at 15j and the
other at 16 cents per pound, and did i
not fall short one pound.
Strange ami unaccountable! it no- i
tuully held out! Not an ounce taken
off! ‘
But the strangest thing of all is,'
that the freight, drayage, storage amt
commissions on the two hales arnonnt- i
od to only three dollars amt serenty
fonr cents..
Now, look upon the other picture:
I immediately turned to accounts of;
sales made in Savannah and Angus- i
ta, and found this result, viz: that
the charges on one bale of cotton
sold about tlie same time in Savan-j
null was four dollars and ninety-two
cents, a difference in favor of Rhodes
and the Patrons’ Warehouse of three :
dollars and fifty-five cents i5;1.55) per!
bale.
And mark von, the Savannah bill '
experienced a loss of fifteen pounds
i/i transitu, 'according to llie same |
Fairbanks’ scales. Augusta I 'mtsli

Tli© State debt assumption project
being now certain to come before tlm
next Gcmoordtio House of Represent
atives at Washington, the Boston
Journal compiles n table showing that
the Southern States have debts
amounting to $214,775,000. The North
ern States set, down as Republican
and opposed to the assumption of t lie
debts have in the aggregate debts
only amounting to $58,000,461, and
the Republican States that are ex
pooted to vote for the assumption of
the debts have in the aggregate an
Indebtedness of #48,089.000. The
largest debt in the list is that of Vir
ginia, #44,000,000; North Carolina
next with #36.000,000; then Louisiana,
#29,376,010: then New York, #23,887,-
270. But these were small sums corn ■
part-d with the debt of New York
city, #119,000,600.
Fuou statistics recently published, I
concerning the mortality ot the race- j
es in many sections of the South, itj
would appear that the question of
the eonluct of races bids fair to be
settled iuu way which will have lit
tle to do with either human ingenuity
or statemanship. in South Carolina,
for example, the deaths among tiic
whites have been one in thirty-three,
and among the blacks one iti sixteen,
while among the blacks there have
been six still-born children to one
among the whites. The death rate
among children under live years of i
age hiis been only half as great in the
white ranks as in the black, ami so, if 1
this condition of things isany criterion ;
the color line throughout the South
promises to dissolve by gradual
stages before the encroaching march
of death.
AeedKDtKo to a Washington female j
correspondent, an uglv woman is a
mistake of Nature. The Washing
ton correspondent knows what she is
talking about, but we ought not to tie
too hard on Nature. The mistakes
that pretty women are certain to
make, even hi those isolated eases
where they have been blessed with
brains, are apt,to lead the best friends
of the sex to think that, after all, it
may be just as well to leave the hulk
of the blundering to Nature.

With a few more sueli decisions as

will come to suspect that, they haven't
