Ho was a fireman on the train that was
thrown from the track by obstructions
placed upon it. Since tho accident hap

possible, and now that it lias been suc
cessfully performed, it is to be hoped that
tho patient will recover.

Parties who walked on tho South Com

quite a number of boys of all colors and
ages worn bathing in the river at that
point. This ought to be stopped at once
It is in violation of a city ordinance, and
should not bo allowed. Ladles and gen
tlemen walk on tho commons overy after
noon, and tho river ought to be kept clear
of boys. Boys will bathe. It is their na
ture, and they cannot be kept from it;
but they can bo mndo to resort to that

Railroad bridge, where they may indulge
in their aquatic enjoyments far from pub

be disposed to repeat the experiment.

Fnn to Come.
Plo-nles havo Just fairly begun to come
upon us. Tho next two woeks are laid off
nicely for these frolics. On Friday tho
grand excursion to Opelika will come off.
Tills will probably’bo tho crowning event
of tlio season. An immense crowd will he
in Opelika on that day.
On Saturday the operatives of tho Mus
cogee Mills will go to Klugsboro, on tho
North A South Road. They have invited
their friends from tho Eagle & Phenix
Mills and Clapp’s Factory to accompany
them. Such a day of rustic pleasure and
recreation will be enjoyed no little.
On Thursday, 20th, Broad Street Metho
dist Sunday School will go to Kingsboro.
This is a largo and flourishing school, and
its excursion will be one of the largest of
the season.
On Saturday, 22d, tho First Baptist Sun
day School of this city will also go to
Kingsboro. Amplo preparations will be
marie for tills excursion, and a nicer affair
than this will bo has never been gotten up.
We look forward to the 22(1 with no little
pleasure.
The Brownoville Baptist Sunday School
will go up the North A South Road on tho
29th.
On next Saturday there will probably bo
a pleasure party of young folks at Rovers'
Leap, on the Chattahoochee river.
Wo do not know how many more pic
nics will bo announced, but from present
indications wo Judge that tho number will
be amply large to afford fun and recrea

but once a year, and while it is with us it
certainly ought to be enjoyed to its fullest
extent.

Our market affords fine variety now.
Vegetables are coming in very fast and
selling cheap. On yesterday we noticed
blackberries and dewberries for sale at
fifteen cents a quart. It Is very early for
blackberries, and the price now asked is
very high compared to that for which
they can bo purchased after tho crop fully
ripens. They are sold as low as seventy
five cents a bushel in the summor months.
Whortleberries were also offered for sale
yesterday at twenty cents a quart. The
fruit season seems to be somewhat earlier
than usual. The crops of nearly all kinds
of berries are said to be fine, and house
wives are happy. Strawberries of the
finest variety can now lie bought for twelve
and a half cents a quart, while really good
ones sell for ten cents. There is a fine
supply of this delicious fruit in tho mar
ket. One gentleman brought in ninety
quarts yesterday. He says ho gathered
much over a h und rod quarts from his
vines at one time. This is an unusual
quantity to come from one patch.
Tho culture of strawberries and raspber
ries seems now to bo roceiving much more
attention than it formerly did, and we may
look for a groat improvement both in tho
quantity and quality of this lino fruit. It
is to be hoped that fruit growing general
ly will receive from our peopio tho atten
tion its importance demands. Everything
seems to bo adapted to tho growth of al
most ail common fruits, and in a few years
we may sec them all in successful cultiva
tion.

Homicide In Ru**ell County, Ain.
On yesterday, wo loarned that a homi
cide occurred at Perkins’ Mills, In Ala
bama, and on tho Mobile and Girard ltail
road.
A whito man, named Thomas Burch,
shot and Instantly killed a negro named
Harney Johnson, under the following cir
cumstances: It appears that the negro
had l>oen in the employ of Mr. Burch, and,
for some reason, had left him. He, accord
ingly, wont to see the negro, with the in
tention of inducing him to return to his
service. Tho two had angry words about
something, and the negro started toward
Burch with a spade which ho drew back In
readiness to strike him down. When the
negro was near to him, Burch drew a
Smith A Wesson’s pistol, and fired. Tho
ball took effect, and inflicted a wound of
which tho negro died almost Instantly.
Mr. Burch has given himself up to tho
authorities, and is now under arrest. It is
generally supposed that nothing will be
done with him, as the killing seems to
have been done in self-defence.

Protracted Meeting*.
Protracted meetings of unusual interest
are now in progress at the three Method
ist churches in this city.
The meeting at St. Luke has been in pro
gress three weeks, and the interest still
continues. About fifty have been added
to the church. The congregations are
good during the week and very large at
night.
A protracted meeting has just been be
gun at St. Paul church, and we hope it
may result in t he accomplishment of much
good.
On Sunday night a meeting of the same
kind was begun at Broad street Methodist
church. This church has a field in which
a vast deal of good may bo accomplished.
The services at tho Baptist church were
discontinued after the pastor left for the
convention, which has been in session at
Charleston, S. C.
The meeting at tli is church was one of
peculiar interest. A large number of con
verts were baptized and admitted to the
church during its progress.

purpose of affording to the people the
benefits of a first class Home Institution.
The rates of premiums have been care
fully calculated upon the most approved
basis, and aro consistent with safety and
undoubted security. They are not higher
than those charged by the best Northern
life insurance companies, many of which
exact an extra premium for residence in
the South. The surplus will be accurately
ascertained and distributed equitably
among the policy holders. In this way
life insurance will be offered at its actual
cost.
Besides the ordinary forms of insurance

Fortunately, this dangerous disease is
on the decrease in this city and vicinity.
During the past month there has been an
unusual number of cases of sickness from
it. Owing to the skillful troatmen it re
ceived at the hands of our physicians,
there wero few deaths. The dis
ease seemed to be more general as well as
more fatal across tho river than here. It
has abated largely there and seems to be
under control now. The unseasonable
weather and sudden changes of tempera
ture experienced this spring have been
sufficient to cause a very unusual amount
of sickness for this healthy locality.

The demand for Dr. J. Bradfield’s Fe

that their wants may now be supplied.
Physicians of high repute are using this
great remedy, in daily practice, all over

HEARTY, BLOOMING WIDOW.
Marietta, Ga., March 9,1870.
Mtssrn. Bradfield A Oj. :
Gentlemen—You will please ship us an
other supply of your invaluable Female
| Regulator, and forward bill by mail. We
are happy to state that this remedy gives
better satisfaction than any article we
sell. We have been selling it since 1868,
and witnessed many remarkable cures by
it. Ainong others, there was a lady
friend of ours who was sallow and sickly
until she was twenty-six years old, when
she was married. Her husband lived two
years and died. She continued in bad
health; in fact, she has never been what
a woman ought to be. A few months
after the death of her husband she saw
your advertisement, and came to our
store and bought a bottle of your Regula
tor from us. and took it according to di
rections. It has cured her sound and
well, brought her regular monthly peri
ods on, and to-day she is a hearty, bloom
ing widow—with * the use of but two bot
tles of your Regulator, costing her only
three dollars, when she had tried several
physicians and spent a great deal of
money without any benefit. Wishing you
great success with your valuable reme
dies, we are, respectfully yours, etc.,
