—Ne\v.s came to a Covington lady
last Monday that a fortune of sixty
millions dollars had fallen to herself
and mot her. It appears that a bache
lor kinsman in Europe, who was im
mensely wealthy, in his last will and
testament left this enormous sum to
this good lady and her aged mother.
We trust, it the gentleman is dead,
that the report is true.
—The Sumter Ilepidilimn says: On
Wednesday night, the 13th ot May, a
colored man by the name of .John
McCree, in the employ of Mr. J. -T.
Siappoy. of Sumter, entered the
sleeping apartment of that gentle
man’s sister and daughter, between
10 and 11 o’clock. When discovered
he was stooping at the foot of the bed
pulling the covering from the persons
of the occupants. This woke one of
the ladies, and seeing the negro, she
immediately gave the alarm. On
hearing the ladies scream Mr. Blap
pev ran to the room, but the scamp
had escaped before tie reached the
door and is now at large. We hope
the scoundrel will soon be caught and
brought to justice.

Hon. B. H. Hill being elected, the
Atlanta Herald has taken the Phila
delphia centennial humbug under its
protecting care. For one, we are
willing that the Herald may have all
the glory to be obtained from a vig
orous campaigning in this direction.

all. The mails on Saturday passed
on the limited express train, as pro
posed by Col. Scott, making a saving
of over one hour in the transmission ;
but to-day they tvent both ways on
the slow train. Outside of the Post
Office Department it is stated that
Mr. Hinckley, of the Philadelphia,
Wilmington & Baltimore Road, ob
jects to the limited express train be
ing cumbered with the mails, but the
Post Office Department hns no ad
vices upon tlie subject.
Mr. Hinckley will, however, doubt
less be called upon soon to define his
position and lot the public under
stand whether he [imposes to stand
in the way of prompt transmission of
mails between two important points.

Washington, .Tune 7. Some 130 to
140 mail routes in the Southern and
Western Stntes, which were awarded
under the lettings of October and De
cember last, are to be re-awarded,
the bidders having failed to lile their
contracts prior to the first of June, as
required by law. These routes are
located as follows: Seventeen in Vir
ginia, one in South Carolina, eight in
Georgia, two in Florida, three in Ala
bama, one in Mississippi, six in Illi
nois. seven in Michigan, twelve in
Wisconsin, nine in Minnesota, five in
lowa, fifteen in Missouri, six in Ar
kansas, three in Louisiana, four in
Texas, and fifteen scattered among
other States.

The rumors of a failure current
on Saturday in Now York, point to a
large firm engaged in the tea trade.
—There is as yet absolutely no clue
to the theft of the package of money
recently taken from tho cash room of
the Treasury, in Washington.
A fire occurred at Hamilton, On
tario, Sunday, which destroyed prop
erty to the value of $200,000; insur
ance, #47,500.
The Prussian government has,
through its representative at Brus
sels, made renewed protests to the
Belgian government against Cut In die
processions.
A succession of earthquakes and
a tidal wave occurred at New Caledo
nia, with disastrous results. Several
villages were swept away, with much
loss of life.
A vessel sailed from New York
for Liverpool, Saturday, with <5,159
bales of cotton, which is said to be,
with one exception, the largest cargo
of this staple ever taken from any
United States port.
—The Indian chiefs, under the lead
ership of Lone Horn and Long Man
dan, arrived in New York from Wash
ington Sunday, accompanied by their
agents and interpreters. They stay
there several days to see the sights.
—Several boys, while digging for
fish bait in a lot at Broad street and
Buckland, Philadelphia, dug up the
body of an infant. A further exami
nation by the coroner yesterday af
ternoon result ed in tho finding of
eight more bodies of infants, all sup
posed to be the victims of crime.

Washington, June 7. - The Presi
dent has ordered the reserve for mil
itary purposes of nil public lands
bordering on several passes of the
Mississippi river for a distance of
twelve miles from the Gulf of Mex
ico, under the act of Congress pro
viding for the improvement of that
river by the jetty system. The prac
tical effect of tills order will be to
prevent tho occupation of these
lands by squatters who, under
the homestead law, might locate
upon any lands on which,
if there are any such valuable mate
rial for the jettys, might lie found for
the purpose of disposing of such ma
terial at exorbitant prices.

of Congress, was announced in the
Stock Exchange to-day. A consid

senger rates by the Erie road.
