The Girard boys tell a pretty good tale
on one of the boys of Russell county. Ho
Is represented as having tired of the busy
scenes of this life, and longing for the
rest, and quiet of the life to come. Nature
was standing up too welt for him, so he
took into his head to try an overdose of
laudanum, and having procured a bottle
he notified his friends and the public that
the jig wae up, and he would depart. In
the meantime he was allowed, while he
thought no one was watching him, to
pour out most of tlio laudanum. He
druinod the two drops from the phial,
threw it into the air and called for a

THE TIMEB: SKUOIY MORN 1 NO, OCTOBER 24, 1875,
rttOM HAMILTON.
Hamilton, llaukib County, Ga., i
October 23,1875. f
Editors Times: Although I write from
this place, whero I am now sojourning,
you know rno for an old citizen of Colum
bus, and one keenly alive to anything
touching her fate and prosperity.
When the North A South Railroad was
llrst projected, I was opposed to the city's
taking stock in it- -believing, and contend
ing, that railroads, like other enterprises,
should depend upon private capital. I
would be still opposed to the city, as a
corporation, donating money for its exten
sion ; still I am firmly convinced that Co
lumbus is largely interested in the com
pletion of the road to the point over the
Pino Mountain, called “Chipley,” if no
farther. When 'he road reach** that far,
it will tap a region that will contribute, at
least, from 8,000 to 10,000 more bah* of
cotton yearly to our town, and consequent
trade. A careful estimate, I understand,
has been made, which proves that the de
sirable object can bo reached, at a cash
expenditure of about $55,000. This small
sum arises from the fact that the road is
nearly, and completely, graded to the point
mentioned. Surely, then, a successful
effort should be made by interested citi
zens to secure to Columbus the benefits at
hand. The Pine Mountain is a barrier
which must be overcome, before a large
trade can reach you which now goes else
where. This trade originally sought Co
lumbus, notwithstanding the Mountain's
ruggedness, and continued until more in
viting Helds were opened. You will have
it again, when you can offer anything like
equal facilities of transportation.
Let your people move without sluggish
ness to attain an object so desirable. Cot
ton Is now being hurried to market almost
as first as it Is ginned and packed. This
arises from the necessity of the farmers
to meet their obligations, and not from
their satisfaction at the price. The crop
In this county is very largely below the

TUP. GREAT SHOW.
HOWES’ GREAT LONDON CIRCUS AND
MENAGERIE.
fFroro the Memphis AvsUnrhe.)
Never, except on the celebration of Mur
al Gras, has our city witnessed such a
gathering of people as that which assem
bled on the streets yesterday to witness
the advent of Howes’ Great London Cir
cus and Menagerie. Long before the hour
appointed for the appearance of the
grand cavalcade peoplo began to assem
ble on tho principal streets, along the pro
posed lino of march, and when the first
notes of the band, which headed the pro
cession, were heard, every available
space which could afford a good veiw was
occupied. Windows, balconies, awnings
and sidewalks were crammed with people
eager to see the street display, about the
magnificence of which so much had been
said. That they were not disappointed
was manifested by the exclamations of
surprise and admiration that greeted tho
living panorama at every point. Unques
tionably it was more beautiful than any
similar street entertainment ever offered
US our people, and was but the foretaste
of tho Inimitable performance that was
seen later under the canvas. The caval
cade was many squares in length, and
was composed of cavaliers, knights and
ladies on horseback, Roman chariots,
drawn by horses four abreast, a cage full
of African hyenas, among which fearless
ly sat the negro keeper, Iroquis Indians,
dressed in their fantastic costumes* pain
ted, and carrying implements of Indian
warfare, the fivo performing elephants
and a camel, a number of wagons on
which were beautifully painted allegori
cal pictures, and containing the wild ani
mals belonging to Sanger’s English Men
agerie. The striking features of the dis
play were two magnificent chariots,
drawn by richly caparisoned horses.
These chariots were handsomely painted
and gilded, and displayed on the sides u
number of mirrors, which, as they moved
along, multiplied and reflected the gorge
ous pageantry, producing a pleasant ef
fect on the beholders. To attempt a min
ute description of the display would be
almost an endless task, as each feature of
it presented something entirely new and
far eclipsing any circus display ever made
in the South.

J>latliitfulalit-d Compliment from the Mo
preme Court.
Our young friend, Thomas J. Chappell,
lias been the recipient of a compliment, no
i less merited and appropriate than it is un
| usual from so high a source. Delivering
| the opinion of the Supreme Court, in tho
cast? of Harriet E. Turman vs. Cargill A
Daniel, Messrs. Thornton it Grimes for
plaintiff in error. Judge Jackson said,
“the question was very ably argued by
the counsel for defendant in error, who
made his maiden speech in this court with
a force and acuu en, which will long be re
membered by thoe who heard It, and
which was altog* h worthy the son of
Ids lather.” He certaily
created gn?at doubts in our minds as to
tho constitutionality of the act in ques
tion. While he lost his case, our talented
representative gallantly “won his spurs,”
and confirmed the high reputation he has
so deservedly acquired as an attorney and
I an ornament to his profession.

It is not often that a journalist is called
upon to record a more distressing acci
dent than befell Miss Fannie Arthur, the
devoted step daughter of old man Tom
Butler, who is tho bridge keeper on the
Southwestern Railroad at Flint River
bridge. From Conductor Dense, we learn
she was run over by a pole car at the end
of the bridge. She saw the car coming,
and ran backwards across the track, in
chikl-ltkegh*?, as she bad often done. The
car ran over her. killing her instantly, and
throwing the car from tho track, seri
ously injuring two negroes on it.

We would not notice our own success

let the advertising public know tho exact

j were so fortunate as to be presented with

makes the Columbus Times, the very best
advertising medium to reach the Florida

circulation, from all we gather, is double
their aggregate circulation in that section.
With such advantages, we would like for
more of the merchants to use our columns.

The demand for Dr. J. Brad field's Fe

the annals of popular remedies. Orders
come in so thick and fast that the Propri

them all. He is happy to state that ar
rangements are now complete by which
lie is prepared to manufacture Female
Regulator on a scale equal to the emer
gency, and th* public may feel assured
that 'their wants may now be supplied.
Physicians of high repute are using this
great remedy, in daily practice, all over
Georgia. Hereafter no woman need suf

Messrs. Bradfield *fc Cb.:
Gentlemen—You will please ship us an
other supply of your invaluable Female
Regulator, and forward bill by mail. We
are happy to state that this remedy gives
better satisfaction than any article we
sell. We have been selling it since 1868.
and witnessed many remarkable cures by
it. Among others, there was a lady
friend of ours who was sallow and sickly
until she was twenty-six years old, when
she was married. Her husband lived two
i years and died. She continued in had
health; in fact, she has never been what
a woman ought to be. A few months
after tho death of her husband she saw
your advertisement, and came to our
store and bought a bottle of your Regula
tor from us, and took it according to di
rections. It has cured her sound and
well, brought her regular monthly peri
ods on, and to-day she is a hearty, bloom
ing widow—-with the use of but two bot
tles of your Regulator, costing her only
three dollars, when she had tried several
physicians and spent a great deal of
money without any benefit. W ishing you
great success with your valuable reme
dies, we are, respectfully yours, etc.,
