The Flyrbla Agriculturist procured
a swding of Guiuott grass TPimicum
jn meturuia', from tun West India
14uiuls u few years ago and soattorted
it among the Florida plantar*.' and
now omi of those favored planters
writes to that paper ns follows :
Afterexporitnentintt with Bermuda
grass, Alfalfa* Egyptian nnllet., etc.,
I have come to the conelnsion that
uo grass grown at thu-South eon np
proaeh the Guinea grass iu rapidity
of growth, yield and nnrrirloos ipHih*
ty. It is psrtieularly adapted to
sows, as it increases the flow of m'dlt.
Owing to the uncertiln germination
of the seed, If is propagated hy trues
planting in damp or showery weath
er. Having ploughed and leveled the
ground, set the plant in a waritbiQ
jHisltion, fwo. feet each way; care
should bo used that tile plants are
set uniformly, so that a plow run he
tisetl lyot.ii ways until the plants are
well started, after which it will take
earn of itself. Wlien it has attained
a foot in height it cun lie cut monthly
in this oUtnate, yielding from ten to
twelve torts peraereeach year. After
cutting, new shoots start from around
the base of each plant, so that it. en
tirely covers the ground after the
tlrst visit's growth. There is now on
my place Guinea grass that has been
eaten off severul tunes this season,
high enough to hide a horse. This
grass (’while it will grow on any
kind of soil , like everything else,
will respond liberally to the applica
tion of a little well rotted manure at
the time of setting out, and an occa
sionally stirring of the soil to keep
up its absorptive powers.
“It I owed a man an equinoctial
storm and lie wouldn’t take this for
the debt I’d never settle with him,"
was the placid remark of a Texas
gentleman just after the recent flood
there.
