public wero notllted that the Central Rail
load had acceded to the demand of Super
intendent Dunham, ill regard to freight
rates, and in consoquencu of that fact, the
Montgomery A Enfaula Railroad will not
llnd It necessary to place upon our river
another lino of boats. It was a question
whether or not the now line would hurt
Columbus; but our merchants have been
so badly freight-ridden by tho Central,
that they were ready to take the chances
with anything, hence were greatly disap
pointed by tiie announcement that the
rival line would not be placed upon the
river.
We are in receipt of late advices from
Mr. J. P.Coker, that he is nearing New
Orleans wltn Ids boat, destined fur tills
place. Ilis boat Is the only chance for Co
lumbus to get u reduction on freights.
We are Informed that Mr. Coker is bark el
up in his enterprise by tlio Jacksonville,
Pensacola J- Mobile Railroad, and that
they will furnish another boat, if necessa
ry to do the trade.

Railroad Association.

John Burke, the manager—a most cour
teous gentleman- informed me that the
troupe would appear in Columbus on Sat

Bill and Texas Jack, and will well repay
all who visit them.
We have met Capt. Theo. Fontaine ami

Church gave an elegant entertainment
last night ut the Central Hotel. The festi
val was In charge of Airs. Shipp and
Aliases Johnson and Lockhurt, as u com
mittee to represent the school. Doors

was tilled with the beauty and chivalry ol

The meat table was loaded with tic

said, that to remove stumps from a Held
