Urge ami Nniall Farms.
By the census or 1870 the (arms of
the United States are divided as to
size as follows, the whole number be
ing ‘2,659,985:
tinder live acres 6,875
Five acres and under ten 171,021
Ten acres and under twenty 394,097
Twenty acres and under fifty 847,8 it
Fifty acres and underone hundred 754,221
One huudred acres and under live
hundred 505,054
Five hundred and under one thou
sand 15,837
One thousand acres and over. . 3,720
Average size of farms 158
Twelve of the States liuvo furtns
that average less than 125 acres in ex
tent, which is less than the average
elsewhere, which in some btates runs
up nearly to an average of 500 acres.
These twelve States give the follow
ing as the average size of their
farms:
Maine 98 New Jersey... 08
Now Hampshire 122 Pennsylvania. .. 103
Massachusetts . .103 Indiana 112
Bhodelsland 94 Ohio 11l
Connecticut 93 Michigan 101
New York 103 Wisconsin IN
While the total value of the farms
in the United States is put down at
$9,262,803,361, the value in the above
small-farm States foots up $5,407,587,-
178, or nearly three-tilths of the total,
and this, too, while the area of the
States is less than one-tenth of the
area of the whole country, No more
eouelusive exhibit of the practical su
periority of the small-furm system
could be given than this.—Uural New
Yorker.
One of the curses of Kentucky and
other States to-day is too much land
and too little capital. The individual
who is in debt for his land, unless he
is a man of rare push and energy,
that will enable him to get rid of the
incubus, is much worse than an ordi
nary slave. His mind has lost its
freedom. He is unable to give his
thoughts to his business. Every now
and then the image of the party to
whom he is in debt will rise up in
horrible proportions before him.
Young man, don’t be in too big a
hurry to own large tracts of laud.
Hasten slowly, as the old German
proverb has it, and what you do, do
well. The spread-eagle style of agri
culture is played out, and there is no
sort of analogy between thousands
of acres which the eye can not range,
and an immense mercantile project,
every part of which is right under the
iiersonal inspection of its manager.—

“Two Dollars ox tue Jack.”—The
cadaverous sitectre of Greek Gulch
was in town last week, and brought
enough gold dust with him to afford
an excuse for Chaparral Joe to open
his faro book. The spectre lost sev
en ounces, and after announcing that
he was “clinched” asked permission,
in his usual polite manner, to “play
two dollars on the Jack.”
"Can’t do it,” retorted Joe.
“Pull,” was the sententious re
mark of the spectre.
“Twon’tdo,” tirutly answered Joe.
Quick as thought the spectre drew
a derringer and thrusting it down on
the card, yelled in tones that would
have done credit to a crazy Digger
Indian :
“Two dollars on the Jack, make it
or bust; pull, youscavenger, pull, or
this bank’ll suspend payment right
here.
The effect was instantaneous. Joe
straightened up with the remark:
"All right, mister, all right. That’s
good fur two dollars,” and slipping a
card from the bottom, won the der
ringer, The spectre had asserted
himself, however, and departed per
fectly satistied with the result. —Tou-

If the watery portions of our food are not pass
ed off, they must, when retained in tho system,
produce serious difficulties. Language toils
when attempting to describe the sufferings of per
sons whose kidneys are out of order ; gravel,
back-ache, infiammntion of tho bladder and of the
delicate membranes of the urinary organs are the
result if the water is not regularly and properly
carried through tho kidneys.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum
is effectual in promoting tho secretion of tho wa
tery aud unuutritious portions of the food, and
in carrying it off by its proper outlets.
Whatever portion of our food is unserviceable
should bo passed off' In tho water in sweat, and
from the bowels. If these useless matters are
retained disease is sure to follow, for then the
blood becomes poisoned with the impurities
which should pass off in their proper channels.
The Cordial Balm of Syricum and Tonic Pills
1h a powerful cleanser of the blood; it starts the
liver and kidneys into active operation, and acts
on all tho secretions of tho body. It carries oil
old and foul elements in tho blood, which are
slow and sure death if allowed to remain iu the

How few poople are found without some indi

recognized ever since classic ages, when a sound

from alcoholic indulgence or too free use of to
bacco, suffer from tremor, palpitation of nervous
excitement—all of which can bo removed and per
