tho map of a largo class of men's capabili

doing business in a distant town takes up

almost every case ho can estimate the
character of tho men who arc soliciting
tho public patronage. Tho advertising

Sterling 11. Toney, Eq.
We are more than glad to clip the fol
owlng from the New York Union, for in
t, it tolls of a friend we have known from
boyhood, and predicts for him the success
that Ills extraordinary talents should
command:
“Counselor Sterling is. Toney, of tlie law
firm of 1). t T. McMahon, 220 Broadway,
then followed In an able speech on the
plaintiff's part. His arguments were re
plete with satire and sarcasm on tlie coii
iluet of the defendant., and ids closing ap
peal to tlie Jury was very eloquent nud
effective. In reply to the opposite coun
sel's claim that a soldier was entitled to
more, regard than another ordinary hu
man being, Counselor Toney in a very ap
propriate and amusing manner alluded to
Captain Jinks and to Bium-Fly, citing
that pretty poem and adjusting It to the
defendant soldiers, Ac. Indeed,Counselor
Toney's debut upon this occasion reflected
credit on the law (Inn, with which lie is
connected, and was applauded at Intervals
as sober and talented. Tlie dignity and
cool resolution, in which be dwelt on his
gracol'ul subject, found many mi admirer
in the court room anil had a telling effect
upon tho jury.
Judging from this splendid debut,
Counselor Toney lias a very promising fu
ture before him. This gentleman comes
highly recommended to this city from one
of the best families In tlie South, w hore he
received a first-class education. Ho is at
homo in his profession and we think does
