For Vertioal Writing.
It i$ very probable that the board of
education of this county will follow
the lead of the other progressive
county school authorities throughout
the state, and adopt the vertical style
of penmanship to be taught in the
sahoole here. The vertical style is
being adopted by all the large cities,
and has much to recommend it. The
board now has the matter under ad>
yiasmsnt, and it is very probable that
the Spencerian system will be thrown
out, to make room for the new and up
to-date style.

How to Make 7 our Decorations For tie
Christmas Table. •
The (lecora-tions appropriate for a
Christmas table are red and green
the glossy hollow leaves with the
bright red berries, the evergreens,
candles with red shades, and satin
rlbons of the same bright hue upon a
snowy damask tablecloth.
A simple but effective decoration is
made by arranging a largo mat of
holly or evergreens in the center ot
the table, with a Santa Claus standing
upon it,bis pack filled with bonbons
and mottoes.
A decoration that will please tbe
little ones is a miniature Christmas
tree in the center of the table. Secure
a small but perfectly shaped cultivated
pine, make a bank of evergreens and
holly to cover the jar holding the tree,
ornament the tree with light but spark
ling trinkets, tinsel fringe, and dust
with Jack Frost powder. Arrange
two ribbons diagonally across the
table, fastening along them here and
there twigs of evergreen or holly, and
in the two opposite corners place the
candelabra upon mats of green, the
candles capped with red and white
shades.
With walls and mantles of a dining
room bung with graceful festoons and
ropes of greens, with plenty of light
and warmth, bright faces and good
cheer everywhere, the Christmas deco
rations will be a success. S. H, B.

How Savannahians Are About To Be Hoise
by Their Own Petard .
A special to the Constitution from
Brunswick says:
‘•Brunswick politicians and business
men are viewing with something akin
to amazement Savannah’s protest
against John H. Deveaux for collector
of customs at Savannah. According
to most reliable information, Deveaux
was strongly and heartily indorsed
several years ago for the Brunswick
custom house by the leading business
organizations of Savannah. It is
stated that the Savannah cotton ex
change members, now objecting to
Deveaux at Savannah, were the most
potent influences in securing his ap
pointment to the Brunswick office.
“It is a fact that Deveaux has now
in his possession the strongest possible
indorsements that Savannah’s business
men could write for his appointment
as collector at Brunswick, a port rank
ing next to Savannah as the largest
naval store port in the world, and one
that does annually over $20,000,000
worth of exporting.
“It seems unreasonable to suppose
that these Savannah indorsements for
Brunswick will not now aid Deveaux
in his fight for Savannah. Morally,
and in every other way except financial
prominence, Deveaux ranks the high
est in the colored race in this section
of Georgia. He is regarded here as a
sure winner, and Savanuah’s own in
dorsements will land him.”
