W COLONEL GOODYEAR’S WORK.
The Washington Post pays ade

Hr readers art doubt less familiur

But the auooesa that baa followed
the praotioal application of Colons)
Goodyear’s plan baa demonstrated the
truth and value of the dynamite theo
ry. With a fund of only l,Boocon
tributed by the inventor of the jden
and four other# who believed in It,
Colonel Goodyear began work in the
summer of 1881, The practical expe
rience of only threa week* demonstra
ted the benefit of the exploaiona, for
even in that short period, a marked
deepening over the shoals ooourred.
Many times work has been suspend-
ed in the enterprise, but Colonel
Goodyear has stuck to the plan most
resolutely. The bar of the harbor,
four and a half miles from land, has
been increased In navigable depth
more than seven feet, so that it can be
.easily crossed by ships drawing
|twentor-five feet of water. A channel
only eighteen feet deep at high tide,
and with each abrupt turns that large
veeaela of three or four hundred feet
in length could not reach the sea
through it, has been superseded by a
new channel, through which vessels
four hundred and sixty feet long have
crossed the bar to the ocean.
More than that, the commerce of the
port bae grown from 16,600,000 in 1896,
ly thinks that Colonel Goodyear de

The statement in our Brunswiok,

Hihipmeote from that port during the

UtoyLAUAPtiou to the fact (hat
nowhere in all tba govern meat's pub
lic work are results so apparent and
ao immediate as in tba deepening of
southern harbor*. Even a little work
brings its immediate result, disolosed
in the statistics of the tains year.
I There is ao interesting history ooo
neoted with tbs improvement of the
Brunswick bsrhor channel and her
bar, wbioh is not altogether to the
credit of the government. C. P. Good
year, an attorney of Brunswick, con
ceived the idea of using dynamite in
straightening and deepening the chan
nel. It was impossible for him to
gain the ear of the authorities aa bia
method was eotirely different from
any recorded praotice of the eogf neers.
Ha finally took tbacontraot at bis own
risk, being tba seoood case of this
kind, the other being the Eads’ jetty
eontrsot. It seems that he aocom
pliebed hie work for a sum of money
received from the government which
amount* to more for 7 feet of added
depth than the average oost of one
foot by tba old methods. On the oth
er band, he finds that be baa expended
nearly nine year* of bis life, abandon
ed a promising career at tbe bar,
mortgaged bia home, and is heavily
in debt.
Tbe work Mr. Goodyear has actual
ly accomplished is really remarkable.
An ooean bar four and a bait miles
from land, openly exposed, has been
increased in navigable depth more
than 7 feet and anew and independ
ent ohannel has been oreated by anew
