cials Held Yesterday
1 BIG 111 INVOLVED
The States f. fficials Have Raised
the Assessment From
$150,000 to $420,000
Id the cffioe of Hon, Pope Barrow in
Savannah yesterday sn important hears
ing was held, It wb the adjourned
session of the arbitrators of the case of
the Savannah, Florida, and Western
railway in Georgia, which is endeavor
ing to oorreat the lax assessment im
posed by the state upjn its property io
Georgia. It will be remembered that
Comptroller General Wright raised the
assessment from something like $150,•
000 to *420.000, Of this about slßo*ooo
was the value accredited to the rail
road and aide tracks of the Plant system
between Savaurah and bainbridge,
aad the rest waa upon the wharvea and
other terminals in Savannah. The B‘ate
claimed that this estimate bad' been
made op from the city of Savannah’s
Biesansent of other property adj lining
these terminals and that, mea ured by
this standard, it waa a fair estimate.
The Savannah, Florida, and Western
railway obj -cted to the assessment and
the matter was referred to a board of
arbitration. At 'hit time the general
counsel for the road drew up its state
ment of the case for submission to the
court, but Comptroller General Wright
declined to sign this statement Th=
railroad’s attorneys then issued a man
damus to compel the comptroller to
sign. To th’s proceeding the attorney
general of Georgia idled a demurrer.
This case was set for trial in the oonrts,
but ju*t beftre the hearing came off the
parties reached an agreement in regard
to the submission of the statement and
the matter went back to the board of
arbitration.

retirement of Chairman Cren
s\ w has given rise to some speculation
as to who wiil, be chosen chairman of
the board when it ie reorgan rz;d. Toe
natural "supposition is that the new
chairman will be Jndgo Spencer R
Atkinson, as bo will Uei be the oldest
member of the commission. Then,too,
says the Constitution, Judge Atkinson
is now a resident of Atl.nta, and wi 1
be here to devote bis time and atten
tion to the work.
Judge Atkinson will in the ereot be
beoomes chairman, probably spend
most of bis time in the railroad com
mission tffi je at tbs oapitol There are
many matters ooming before the com
mission constantly which demand the
attention of some member of the body,
and it ia on this account that Chairman
Crenahaw has spent most of hie time
there.
