carried out, a contest at the general
election and its attendant evils, is the

problem now confronting the oity.
Be it further resolved tbat tbe chair
man of this meeting be instructed to
call suub mass meeting for the purposes
stated.

Mr. Twitty again took th floor in
support of bis resolution and at tbe
oonclusion of bis remarks a rising vote
was called for.
The seoretarys count snowed thirty
four for tbe resolution and forty-one
•gainst it
A reoount was cilled, tbe point be
ing made that it was a mass meeting
of white oitizms and several colored
men were participating.
The reoount showed 36 for and 41
against.

It was tben suggested that a cam
paign oommittee of seven be appointed
Chairman Kay stated tbat this oom-
mittee would be named later as he
deemed it proper to oonfer with the
candidates as to their prefereoces as to
who should go on it,
This ended the polilioi.l part of the
meeting and after a short but earns, t
talk from Col. Goodyear inviting those
present to attend the Cane and Cassava
oonvention Tuesday next, the meeting
adjourned.

Retailers Want to Stand Between Manu
facturer and Consumer.
New Orleans, Oot 18.—A coiiventir n
of lumbermen was held here yesterday
wlih President Allen, of the Louisiana
retailers, ae ohairman, and Saoretary
Hirlow of Mississippi r-tailera, as
secretary.
The purpose was to strengthen the
organization of retailers in states
where they already exist and to
encourage union in states not yet
organized. The main object was to
discourage direot transaction betweon
manufacturer and consumer and to
further fbe interests of the retailer. A
number of manufacturers joined the
movement and the meeting wsea b'g
tunoess.
