was one of the things that induced him
to invest ;largely around the city of
Brunswick.
I am deligbtsd to be here and to have
this opportunity of speaking up for my
own town. I have faith In Brunswick
because I have faith in my conntry’s
future, I believe the day ia coming
when It will be one ol the greatest sea
ports on the continent, and I believe
time ia coming when the great com
merce of the world will be oarried un
der the Stars and Stripes. Brunswick,
Oa., was the first community in the
South to oome out squarely and say,“we
are in favor of a ship subsidy,’* Bruns
wick, Ga., looking to that time believes
that no people will be so benefited aa
the people of the Soutb| Within a few
hundred miles of her shore, within a
few hundred miles of the South At
lantic and Golf shores, there is enough
material to bnlld all the ships of the
next thousand years, We ars the
natoral oonntry in whioh ships should
be built. We believe that some of these
days Brunswiok will have great ship
yards. We believe that in a few years
back country will be filled with
(arms and happy homes. We are nat
urally the gateway;to the great Middle
West, and we are 500 miles nearer
Kansas City than is New York. We
have a tremendous advantage over the
Gulf ports for European markets, es
pecially as sails are mere and more giv
ing place to eteam. If we are to culti
vate the great growing trade of South
America and Cuba and Porto Rioo,
Brunswiok must necessarily grow.
We believe the South is going to pro
duce more manufactured goods than
any other portion of this world.
And wo btlisve another thing,
Colonel, we that as the
colored man moving northward
that yon are going to bring a lot or
good people form the North that are
going to till our fapms and go into
those faotoriea. and that we are going
to popu’ate our section with the beet
people under the sun. 1 want to say to
yon that I believe the most patriotic
people of to lay arc the psople of New
England, else why should they stick
to their 0011 country with its five months
of winter when they are within twenty
fourhou s of the fertile valleys of
Georgia, in the most equable climate in
the world. Why do you know that the
healthiest County in the United States
