COTTON JUMPS UP.
On Receipt of Government Estimate of
Small Crop.
Savannah, Dec. 3.—There was a
surprised lot of ootton men at the
Savannah Cotton Exchange at noon
today when the telegraphic report of
the government estimate of the crop
arrived, The floor was orowded with
factors and buyers. Hardly a man
identified with the trade was not Son
hand. The keenest interest was lelt
in the government’s prognostications,
more so than probably in any pait year.
For two years the government has been
a skillful guesteras to the probabilities
of ootton production, Its estimates
have been the closest of any made by
parties whose figures command attont
ion, and there was a general expectancy
in the trade that showed itself plainly
on the faosi of those gathered to re
celve the Washington report,
According to the government experts
the crop for the season will be only 9.-
1>74,000 bales. This would make the
crop a remarkably short one and the
effect of the bulletin was to start futur
es upward at a pretty lively rate. The
bullish tendenoy of the report was appa
rent at onoe.
Tomorrow mo nlng’s Llvetpool mar
ket it expected to show a decided im
provement. In spots there was an ad
vance of 40 points in the asking price
for all grades, but no sales were report
ed made up to 2 o’clock. It remains to
be seen whether the world at large will
acoept the government estimate as
something to bs relied and acted upon.

PRONOUNCED A STROK I
A Short Synopsis of the Message
as Viewed By thr Savan
nah Press.
It is no fulsotnr thing to say that the
message to congress Bent in by Presi
dent Roosevelt today Is the most inter
esting document transmitted from the
white house to the capitol sincß the
war. It is thoroughly original and
does not follow the beaten lines of
summarizing every iLpaitment report
with dry and meeningless detail.
President RioaevoH groups the most
important hinge under seoarate tieuds
and discusses them one by one with
intelligence and statesmanship. The
Pres* cannot agree whh everything he
says.
Not many people will be found who
*an write twenty oolumns upon meas
ures, many of them in controversy, who
coaid expect to secure universal in •
doreement. But it is possible for a
man to present party rn-asuraa and
public needs in a manner which will
command the respect and interest, of
millions of readers, and that is what
Mr. Roosevelt does admirably in his
ft. Fresh
Country
Eggs.
