FIRE LIMITS.
The Council Asked to Extend
Them to West Bay,
‘The Recent Fire Suggests That “An
Ounce of Preventative Is Worth
a Pound of Cure”--Petl
tion From Merchants.
Last Sunday's fearful fire has been
the absorbing topic ever sinc« the
i alarm called firemen and citizens to
■ the scene of wreck and ruin.
Now that there is no further da»
ger from an outburst, the citizens of
I Brunswick are awake to the idea of
j devising some plan which shall, in a
| mee.sure, prevent a like occurrence.
One of Ilie most sensible and
feasible plans is that submitted by
Mr. John B. Davis, who has drawn
up a petition to be presented to the
city council at the next regular
meeting This petition was largely
circulated among the merchants yes
terday, and many signatures were
| attached to it. The following is the
petition, with all the signatures ob
j tainvd up to noon to day:
“Brunswick, Ga., July 15.—T0
I the honorable mayor and council <>!'
the city of Brunswick—Gentlemen:
We the undersigned citizens es the
city of Brunswick, respectfully re
quest that your honorable bodyen
act an ordinance and include the
; property upon the west side of Bay
street, from Mansfield to Gloucester.
\ within the lire limits; this o dinanee
} to include the lately burt diitrict.
i and the same law to apply t» this
, propertv as lias heretofore applied

of Bay st reel

That this petition is one which
concerns every citizen of Brunswick
cannot be denied, and that it will b<
unanimously pasted by the council
there is not a shadow of a doubt.
Aiderman Madden expressed him
self thoroughly last Sunday after
noon while the lire was raging.
Turning to several friends, he re
maiked: "I have tied time and
again to have the council extend the
fire limits to the western side of Bay
street. Now that this great calamity
has befallen the city, I guess some
action will be taken."
It is safe to say that Alderman
Madden voiced the sentiments of the
remaining members of the council,
and that an ordinance extending the
tire limits, as set forth in the peti
tion, will be-speedily enacted.
Working in the Ruins.
At an early hour this morning,
the city chain gang was put to work
removing the ruins of the burnt
buildings on Bay street. They* com
menced their labors where Dow ning’s
building used to stand. Load after
load of burned grain and groceries
when transferred to a lighter at the
foot of Monk street and hauled some
distance down Mie river and dumped
into the water. The work will con
tinue for several days.
Grea' clearing sale going on at
Daughtry's. Everything must be
sold by August Ist.
