There was a little nx ster,
Not very long ago,

You’d ought to hear him crow.
He noticed when
Tnc sun rose in the sky.
Said he: -It thinks I called it.
And that’s the reason why.”
His head was high and empty.
His craw was full of gall.
He strutted aapund the hen-coop
And thought he knew it all

HE ATE NINE PIES.
A Jacksonville Tramp Whose Ap
petite Was Somewhat Hoggish.
A tough looking tramp, giving his
name as John Agnes and hailing
from Jacksonville, went to Joe Nes
tles restaurant this morning on Bay I
street a.id after looking over the
lunch counter with a greedy gaze,
offered to wager the proprietor that!
he could consume ten apple pies at
one sitting,
“Excuse me,” replied Joe. “I’ll
take your word for what you say.
In fact, old boj-, I guess you are
hungry enough to eat a dozen pies,
supplimente I with a half dozen
sandwiches.” i
Several gentlemen who were
standing near, chanced to hear the
conversation, and as a matter of
amusement offered to pay for as
many pies as the “hungry devil ’ I
could eat.
Joe dished out a dozen juicy ap
pie pies and the tramp took his seat I
while a broad smile played across li s
face as lie anticipated the soothing!
effect of the spieai’. And he didn’t:
wait to anticipate long. He simply ■
dived into his meal and the way ;
’ those pies disappeared was a caution.
It w’as real, genuine pleasure to th<
onlookers until the sixth pie had
disappeared and their pleasure was :
‘ succeeded by astonishment.
To make the stor} short, the Jack-
! sonville tough was not satisfied until ;
he had made waj- with nine of the '
dainties.
