Huxford Genealogical
Society to meet
The next scheduled seminar for
the Huxford Genealogical Soci
ety is August 9 at the Homerville
Exchange Club. Seminar will begin
with coffee, donuts, and registration
at 8:00 a.m.
Ms. Tina Mason Seetoo will lec
ture and lead the workshop in Pres
ervation Techniques and processes.
The workshop will be geared to
Courthouse Record Management,
Library Staff and personal family
collections of records. Seetoo has
been the Conservator at the Georgia
Archives in Morrow, GA since Janu
ary 2007.
Prior to coming to the Archives,
she worked in the Preservation Ser
vices department of the Southeast
ern Library Network (SOLINET) for
eight years. She started in 1999 as
the Preservation Field Services Offi
cer, and was promoted to Manager
of Preservation Services in October
2005. She received an MLIS and a
Certificate of Advanced Study in
Conservation from the University
of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining
SOLINET, she spent a year working
in the Book Conservation Lab of the
Smithsonian Institution Libraries.
She lectures on a wide range of
preservation topics and is active in
the ALA Preservation and Reformat
ting Section, the American Institute
for Conservation, Society of Ameri
can Archivists, and the Society of
Georgia Archivists.
Her lecture and workshop is enti
tled: “A Little Goes a Long Way:
Prolonging the Life of Your Collec
tions.”
This seminar is an introduction to
the basic principles of preservation.
The lecture and discussion will out
line common sources of damage to
collections and how to recognize and
prevent deterioration of paper-based
materials.
Attendees will learn ways to slow
deterioration and tips on purchasing
non-damaging enclosures.
The lecture will highlight current
preservation best practices includ
ing a discussion of non-damaging
repairs and reformatting for preser
vation and access.
Luncheon will be provided at this
workshop. Reservations are required
and the cost is $30 for members
and $35 for guests. Reservations are
required by July 15.

St. Simons Library League opens checkbook
St. Simons Library League pre
sented a check for $18,500 to the
St. Simons Library on June 5. The
Library will spend the majority of the
donation on new acquisitions for their
collection including books, audio and
DVDs.
The League will once again spon-

Reid Harris, author of the Coast
al Marshlands Act of 1970, will
sign his book, “And the Coastlands
Wait,” Thursday, August 7, 4-6 p.m.,
Retreat Clubhouse ballroom on St.

’’Sunset on the Fort”
programs scheduled at
Fort Frederica
Beginning Saturday, July 12, Fort
Frederica National Monument will
remain open until sunset on Satur
days through August 9. The ranger
program will begin at 8:15 p.m.
A program entitled “Sunset on
the Fort” will allow visitors a chance
to see the golden sun set upon the
marshes at the Fort and learn about
the site’s history; in particular, the
programs will focus on the declining
years of Frederica, following the bat
tles between the British and Spanish
for control of the region.
Admission fees will be charged for
this program. Visitors are encour
aged to bring a blanket to sit on dur
ing the talk.

Bug”, a national program for children
of all ages, runs through July 17
and includes storytelling, films, work
sheets, book log and prizes. .
Additional benefits from the dona
tion include an upgrade to the library’s
phone system and computer manage
ment. “We will continue to personally
answer the phones,” said Maureen
Hersey, St. Simons Library librarian.
“This will allow us to have voice mail
boxes and we can have recorded mes
sages for library hours, directions and
upcoming events.” The library cur
rently has two computers for sched
uled use by visitors and residents. The
new software will allow the library to
add an additional computer.
Contributions to the Library were
