Classic comedy at the Ritz Summer Movie series
The Comcast Summer Movies at
the Ritz series continues, Thursday,
July 17, 2008, with Howard Hawks’
classic screwball comedy, His Girl
Friday. Presented by Golden Isles
Arts and Humanities Association
(GIAHA) and Comcast Cable, the
1940 hit screens at 7:00 p.m. at the
Ritz Theatre in Downtown Bruns
wick.
Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant
play a divorced couple who also hap
pen to work together as newspaper
reporters, embroiled in a sensational
story they milk for all it’s worth. And
while they’re muckraking, Cary’s
involved in a little scheming of his
own to win Roz back! It’s a fast-
paced, snappy, hilarious movie, con
sidered a national film treasure and
the era’s equivalent of a music video,
featuring the megahit novelty song of
1941 “The Hut Sut Song.” There are
also some unintentionally amusing
movie theater ads from long ago and
previews of coming attractions.
Thanks to a number of Downtown
Brunswick merchants, GIAHA will
also give away several door prizes,
including movie gift baskets from
Coldwell Banker Platinum Part
ners with Blockbuster gift cards, a
gift certificate from Hattie’s Books,
C.A.P.E. Theater Company tickets,
and a $50 gift certificate from Ned
Cash Jewelers, among other fun and
valuable prizes. So hold onto your
ticket stub.
Tickets for the Comcast Summer
Movies at the Ritz are only $5 per
Ritz Summer Movies schedule
• Thursday, July 1 7, 7 p.m. His Girl Friday (1940)
Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell are hilarious as a couple of fast-talking
journalists and on-again-off-again romantic partners in Howard Hawks's
snappy version of the classic newspaper comedy "The Front Page."
• Thursday, July 31, 7 p.m. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Benevolent alien Klatu comes to our planet with his all-powerful robot
to convince the people of Earth to lay down their arms and live in peace.
This may be your last chance to see this classic sci-fi picture—the studio
plans to pull it from distribution in September in anticipation of the Christ
mas 2008 release of the remake.
• Thursday, August 7, 7 p.m. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
The original Material Girl! Marilyn Monroe (with some help from equally
voluptuous Jane Russell) proves that "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"
in this big, splashy Technicolor musical comedy from master director
Howard Hawks.
preserved in the Library of Congress
archives.
Based on the acclaimed stage suc
cess The Front Page (filmed in 1931
and 1974), the casting of Russell and
Grant in the leads lends an extra
touch of romantic tension and chaos
to Ben Hecht and Charles MacAr-
thur’s original script. It’s no wonder
this is many people’s favorite screen
comedy.
Prior to the 7:00 screening of the
feature, Ritz audiences who arrive by
6:30 can also enjoy several short sub
jects, including one about journalism
in the 1940s, fascinating color footage
of the San Francisco International
Exposition of 1939, and a “soundie,”
person, on sale the night of the show
only beginning at 6:00 p.m. Audienc
es are encouraged to bring their own
snacks and enjoy the air-conditioned
comfort of the Ritz and the experi
ence of watching classic films on the
big screen the way they were meant
to be seen.
There is no show on Thursday,
July 24, but the series continues
Thursday, July 31, with the sci-fi
classic The Day the Earth Stood Still

3 local educators are
new Master Teachers
Three Jane Macon sixth grade teach
ers have earned the Master Teacher
Certification in 2008: Yondy Clark -
language arts; Oatanisha Dawson -
math; Brentsie Walker - science.
They were among the 57 new teach
ers who have earned the “Master Teach
er” certification designation based on
appreciable gains they’ve facilitated in
their students’ achievement.
“These teachers join the nearly 300
Master Teachers before them who have
clearly demonstrated their expertise in
helping our children achieve at higher
levels,” said Governor Sonny Perdue.
“They are masters at inspiring students
to learn, and I’m proud to recognize
them for their outstanding work in one
of our most honorable professions.”
Georgia’s Master Teacher Certifica
tion Program was championed by Gov
ernor Perdue during the 2005 legisla
tion session and is coordinated by the
Georgia Professional Standards Com
mission (PSC). It provides statewide
recognition to certified public school
teachers in Georgia who have at least
three years of teaching experience and
who consistently demonstrate instruc
tional excellence through their stu
dents’ achievement.
Master Teacher certification quali
fies teachers to earn a stipend for men
toring new teachers or serving as Aca
demic Coaches who use instructional
release time to promote effective pro
fessional development practices among
colleagues and make recommendations
to improve schools and student learn
ing. In addition, Master Teachers are
eligible to automatically renew their
teaching certificates as long as they
continue to qualify for Master Teacher
status.
