Business Updat
Gnat's, Bubba's promote addition to island-wide trail
Robert “Boz” Bostock was looking
for a way to help the St. Simons Land
Trust raise money for the island trail
system and decided to ask patrons of
his two Redfern Village restaurants,
Gnat’s Landing and Bubba Garcia’s,
to lend a hand.
Now placemats at the restaurants
tell the story. An extra 50 cents per
person will be added to bills to help
pay for the new Lawrence Road Trail
on the north end of the island, as well
as continued expansion and upgrades
to the island-wide trail system.
Bostock will match all contribu
tions, and patrons who choose to can
have the contribution removed from
their bills.
“This was Boz’s concept,” said Dana
Pope, Land Trust director of develop
ment and membership. “He is putting
the need for trail-system funding lit
erally right in front of his customers.
In addition, he is backing it up with
his own contribution.”
A cycling fan who enjoys the exist
ing island trails, Bostock says he
started thinking about how much
could be raised for the trail system if
the two restaurants’ 500 daily patrons
were to contribute a modest amount
each.
The seven-mile leg of the trail that
will extend the existing trail system
from the north roundabout to Hamp
ton Point got a $500,000 jump-start
from an anonymous donor. Glynn
County and the Land Trust each
agreed to put in $250,000, and the
Land Trust plans to raise an addi
tional $1 million needed to complete
the trail.
Construction on phase one of the
trail just north of the roundabout will
begin by early August. That portion
of the trail is being designed and will
be built by the Atlanta-based PATH
Foundation in cooperation with the
county, which will own and maintain
the trail once it is completed.
Contributions — whether by direct
mail or through the Gnat’s/Bubba’s
program — are being accepted by the
Land Trust. The restaurants are the
latest participants in the Land Trust’s
Community Partnership Program,
which also includes the Sea Island
Co., King and Prince Beach & Golf
Resort, Village Inn & Pub, and Bar
bara Jean’s Restaurant. □
