celebrate Hallowed Eve on October 31
from 6 to 8 p.m. with Trunk or Treat.
Brunswick Christian Renewal
Church will have a night of FUN
for families on October 31 from 5:30
to 7:45 p.m. to include Food, Games,
Prizes and a Humongous 22 ft. Slide
and Bounce House for Kids and Adults!

extends sympathy to the family and
friends of Gwen Sanders. Fall Festival
will be Wednesday, October 29, from
5 to 7:20 p.m. in the CLC to include
Hotdogs, chips, drinks, fun and games
for all ages. Congratulations to Thom
and Lynn Chapman on the birth of
their granddaughter, Riley Elizabeth,
daughter of Kevin and Anna Valent.

Vivian C. Paynter
Mrs. Vivian C. Paynter, age 85 of
Marietta and St. Simons Island, GA,
passed away on Monday, October 20,
2008 in the presence of her family.
For 24 years she was a committed
member of the St. Simons Presbyte
rian Church. So loved by her family,
she devoted her entire life to being a
loyal wife to husband, Cal and loving
mother to her children, grandchildren
and great grandchildren. She treasured
her family and greatly influenced the
lives of all who came her way. She
had a special gift and a personal touch
that made her home a place of warmth
and good cheer. Freely giving of love,
laughter and family recipes, she will be
revered and remembered as a fine lady
who exemplified grace and dignity.
She is survived by husband of 65

Jim Benson
James Albin Benson, 73, a long-time
resident of St. Simons Island, went
home to be with his Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ, on Friday, October 17,
2008, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in
Jacksonville, Florida.
He was bom April 4, 1935, in Ann
Arbor, Michigan, one of the six chil
dren of the late Dr. and Mrs. Albin Nils
Benson. He graduated from the Bucks
Comity High School in Doylestown,
PA and then received his B.S. degree
in Chemical Engineering from Penn
State University. After graduation, he
went to work for Hercules, Inc. and in
1962, he married Katherine Morgan
Cox of Vero Beach, FL. Prior to coming
to St. Simons Island in 1979, he and
his family lived in Pitman, New Jersey
and Louisiana, Missouri. In 1997, he
retired from Hercules after 40 years
Charles Evans Mitchell, son of Eliza
beth and Bobby Mitchell.
St. Simons United Methodist
Church extends sympathy to Jack
Jenkins and family in the death of his
brother Bob Jenkins in New York and
to Wayne Sutton and family in the
death of his father Royce in Glennville.
Trunk or Treat is planned for Wednes
day, October 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
in the church parking lot.
Pine Ridge Baptist Church will
have a Fall Festival on October 31 from
6 to 8 p.m.
Frederica Baptist Church will
have a Trunk or Treat event on Fri
day, October 31, in the front parking
lot of their building with hamburgers,
hotdogs, Praise Band music and fun
for all ages.
Norwich Baptist Church will cel
ebrate their 90th anniversary on Sun
day, November 2 at 10:30 a.m. Former
Associate Pastor Randy Lamb will be
the guest speaker and former Music
Minister Andy Cox will lead the wor
ship in song. A covered dish fellowship
will follow the service. The public is
invited.

She will be especially missed by her
niece Marilyn Paynter Tait and dear
friend Judi Paynter.
A memorial service was held Friday,
October 24 at 11 a.m. in the chapel at
H. M. Patterson and Son with the Rev
erend Bill Lawrence officiating.

Mr. Benson was an active mem
ber of the St. Simons Presbyterian
Church where he served as a Deacon
and Elder, president of the Margaret
Britt Sunday School class and also
as a mentor to elementary students
through the Altama PALs program.
He served as Chairman of Global Mis
sions and in 2002 journeyed to Malawi,
Africa with a church mission team.
Prior to coming to this area, he served
the First Presbyterian Church in Loui
siana, Missouri as Deacon, Elder and
Sunday School teacher.
A member of the local Kiwanis Club,
he served as President and Lt. Gover
nor, and in 2006 was honored with the
George F. Hixson Award for exemplary
service. He participated as a volunteer
in numerous charitable groups, includ
ing the Red Cross and Manna House,
and was a member of the Golden Isles
Duplicate Bridge Club.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Ben
son, of St. Simons Island, two daugh
ters, Katherine B. Dudt (Jan Frederic)
of Grove City, PA and Laura B. Keil
(Timothy Harold) of Martinez, CA,
and a son, James Randolph Benson of
Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, Jacob
Dudt, Philip Dudt, Katherine Dudt,
Caroline Dudt, and Jansen Dudt, all
of Grove City, PA; two step-grandchil
dren, Katherine Keil and Aimee Keil
of Martinez, CA; two sisters, Helen
(Michel) Bailie of Charleston, SC and
Jean (Joe) Wilford of Glenside, PA;
two brothers, David Benson (Nancy) of
Sandia Park, NM and Allen (Melody)
Benson of St. Augustine, FL; a sister-in-
law, Mrs. Robert Benson of St. Mary’s,
OH; and 17 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother,
Robert Benson, a sister-in-law, George
Ann Featherston and her husband,
C.D. Featherston, a brother-in-law,
Calvin Cox, and a niece, Callie Musil.
A private graveside service was held
for the family on Tuesday, October 21,
in the Christ Church Cemetery on St.
Simons Island. A Memorial service was
also held later that day at 2:00 p.m. at
the St. Simons Presbyterian Church
with the Reverend Robert Brearley,
the Reverend Dr. John Law and the
Reverend Troy Hauser Brydon officiat
ing. A reception was held following the
service in the Fellowship Hall of the
church.
Honorary pallbearers will be Eric
Benson, David Benson, Allen Benson,
Jacob Dudt, Philip Dudt, Bob Amos,
Jim Dryden, Henry Harvey, Bill Ray
and Don Summers.
