ed his 95th
birthday with
fellow veterans
at a cake cut

Col. Lea
sure served
his country as
an officer in a
combat engi
neer battalion
in WWII and
Korea and as
a staff officer
in Viet Nam.
He is a former
Col. Leasure, right, blowing the candles out on his cake
which is being held by Col. Nick Hart, Jr. USMC (Ret.),
Commander of National Director of the Navy League.
VFW Post 4092 and earned All-State
honors during this tenure. Col. Lea
sure also served as President of the
local Golden Isles Council of the Navy
League.
In 2003, the Veterans Council of the
Golden Isles honored Col. Leasure as
Veteran of the Year' in appreciation of
his many years service to his country
and community. □

Sea Island Stables kicked off its
2009 show season by taking a cham
pion and reserve champion ribbons
at horse shows held Saturday and
Sunday, March 14-15.
In the North Florida Hunter Jump
er Association-sanctioned show on
Saturday, Sea Island riding instruc
tor Beth Merritt claimed the cham
pionship in the Intermediate Hunter
division aboard Quincy, one of Sea
Island’s lesson horses. Leigh Chan
nell and Poco, owned by Hannah,
Amelia and Gloria Brownlee, clinched
the reserve champion tricolors in the
Beginning Rider/Hunter division.
In Sunday’s show, sanctioned by
the First Coast Hunter Jumper Asso
ciation, Lily and Emma Hock began
their promising show careers. Lily,
age 7, won a fourth-place ribbon and
reserve in her Walk classes, and
Emma, age 5, won her first blue
ribbon in Leadline. Both girls rode
Saint, a favorite at the Sea Island
Stables for beginner lessons and car-
