Gloria Bums announces for BOE At Large Post 1

can Primary race for the At Large Post
1 seat on the Glynn
County Board of
Education.
She has entered
the race in response
to a growing need
to elect leaders
who are committed
to improving edu
cational and eco
nomic opportunity
for our children;
who are creative
and open to more
efficient and cost-
effective ways of
delivering services;
who are accessible
and responsive to
the communities
they represent, and who place the edu
cational needs of Glynn Comity chil
dren first.
Bums offers a fair-minded and open
approach with a commitment to spend
the time and energy to improve public
education in Glynn County. She believes
that although Glynn County schools
have made some positive strides, we
can make our schools better with great
er Accountability, Transparency and
Consistency. She views the opportunity
to serve on the Board as a privilege
and not a right. She will approach her
role on the Board with fresh eyes and
open ears and put

She brings more
than 23 years of
public and private
sector experience
in planning and
resource develop
ment along with
experience as a
small business
owner and princi
pal of a consulting
firm to local and
state governments,
nonprofits, K-12
and higher educa
tion.
She has written
$50 million in successfully funded pro
posals to federal, state, corporate and
private sources to support education
and workforce development efforts. She
is a graduate of Clemson University
with a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters
degree in City and Regional Planning.

reading club coordinator, preschool

cabinet representative, SACS site visit
host team member, homeless student
closet coordinator, and member and
chair of elementary and middle school
improvement councils.
She is married to Allen Bums III, a
seventh generation St. Simons Island
native. A1 and Gloria have two school-
aged children.
Bums is a member of the Republican
Party of Glynn County and the Golden
Isles Republican Women's Club, where
she serves on the Executive Commit
tee and as a member of the Legislative
Committee. She is also the Coordinator
of the Overseas Coupon Program, a
GIRWC service project that provides
coupons to help military families sta
tioned overseas. □
Sam Tostensen announces candidacy for
Post 1 Commission Seat
Sam Tostensen, a fifth generation
Glynn County resident, announced
that he is actively seeking the At-
Large Post 1 Glynn County Commis
sion seat currently held by Don Hogan.
Tostensen filed as a
Republican.
Tostensen said,
“I’m extremely
excited and optimis
tic about this oppor
tunity as well as for
the future of Glynn
County.” Tostensen
believes strong deci
sive leadership is
not only needed but
cmcial for the many
issues that Glynn
County is currently
facing.
“Glynn County
is my home. It will
always be my home.
I want to ensure
that we make the ty Commission seat.
right decisions for everyone that lives
here. We need to make the correct
decisions for today as well as for the
future. We need greater vision; long
term vision,” said Tostensen.
He passionately
believes that by running
for the At-Large position,
he will give all the resi
dents of Glynn County a
fresh new voice of repre
sentation.
Tostensen is employed
as a sales representative
with Sun Coast Paper
Incorporated in Bruns
wick. Tostensen majored
in political science at Val
dosta State University. He
is a member of First Bap
tist Church of Brunswick,
a member of the United
Way Glynn County Young
Leaders Society and a sup
porter of The Boys Scouts
of America. □

Neptune Park Fun Zone opens for 2010 season
The Neptune Park Fun Zone pool
located on St. Simons Island opened for
the second season on Saturday, May 1.
The Fun Zone pool will open on week
ends only until Memorial Day weekend,
when it will be open seven days a week
for its regular season hours. Current
hours of operation are Saturday, 11
a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 1:00 p.m. to
7:00 p.m.
All lifeguards are American Red
Cross certified and monitor the pool and
its guests continuously during business

“I feel very confident in our staff
that will be running Neptune Park Fun
Zone this year,” said Wesley Davis,
Recreation and Parks Director. “Our
aquatics team is led by two highly
trained professionals and we’re excited
to be opening again.”
Neptune Park Fun Zone pool fea
tures a beach entry access pool, swim
ming lanes, a separate pool for small
children with water feature and slides,
and poolside seating with umbrellas.
The facility is located off Beachview
Drive on St. Simons Island, where visi
tors can enjoy an oceanfront view.
In 2009,20,600 plus visitors used the
Fun Zone pool and more than 15,000
rounds of golf have been played since
opening day.
