Regent Bishop and President Hepburn
honored at Law Day ceremony

Thursday April 29 was Law Day in
Glynn County and the Glynn County
Bar Association used it to kick off a
series of events beginning with a lun
cheon during which the association
honored James Bishop, a local attorney
who serves as on the University Sys
tem of Georgia's Board of Regents and
Dr. Valerie Hepburn, President of the
College of Coastal Georgia.
Bishop was awarded the first ever
Judge Anthony Alaimo Award.

"The award also serves to acknowl
edge the successful contributions and
dedication to a better civil society of
the recipient," Atwood continued, "This
year's recipient, the first ever, is Regent
James Bishop."
The Liberty Bell Award is a nation
wide award given each year by local
bar associations in conjunction with
Law Day to honor outstanding citizens
within the local community.
The award recognizes outstanding
service performed by a non-lawyer citi
zen who has given of his or her time
and energy to strengthen the effective
ness of the American system of freedom
under law, in keeping with the spirit of
our Constitution.
This year's Liberty Bell Award recip
ient is Dr. Valerie Hepburn.
Atwood said, "The Liberty Bell
Award honors a lay person in our com
munity who, through volunteer efforts,
has encouraged community members
to respect the laws and legal system,
to learn more about and take an active
role in the betterment of our commu
nity, and to take pride in our nation's
system of freedom for all under the
law. This award goes to Dr. Valerie
Hepburn."
Other Law Day related events tak
ing place over the next week include:
• On Monday, May 3 the federal and
superior coruts in Brunswick will be
open to certain 4th and 8th grade stu
dents. The students will meet with the
judges, where they will learn about the
law and what goes on in a courtroom.
• A special edition of The Brusnwick
News will be published on Monday
containing legal articles by various
attorneys and judges.
• On Wednesday, May 5 Southern
District Federal Judge Lisa Godbey
Wood will be named Chief Judge in a
"passing the gavel" ceremony in the
Federal Courthouse.
• A student essay contest is planned.
And
• A mock trial competition was held
for students. □
