The good, the bad and
the extremely ugly
Just when you think you have heard
just about all the cruelty you can stand,
another animal horror story comes
along. An animal-loving friend of mine
sent a USA Today® (Nov. 11, 2010)
article to me.
In Hydro, Oklahoma the police force
is in charge of dog catching services.
Last month Edwin Fry, 73, sprung his
impounded poodle from the city pound
with a pair of bolt cutters. Fry appar
ently couldn't afford $100 to free his
dog, Buddy Tough. The police caught 6
month old Buddy, loose, after a neigh
bor complained.
My question is why couldn't the
neighbor just be a good neighbor and
take Buddy back to Mr. Fry?
Well the police caught Fry and Buddy
escaping on a riding lawn mower and
jailed Mr. Fry and put Buddy down
after his three day time limit at the
pound expired.
Yep. They gassed an old man's dog
with a makeshift gas chamber fed by
the exhaust of a patrol car.
The good is, thank God, the town is
now up in arms over the police actions
and is trying to take over the animal
control services. Residents have bailed
Mr. Fry out of jail and a single resident
has given him a white Chihuahua. A
volunteer group has been organized to
take over animal control but officials
aren't promising anything.
This elaborate lead-in is to another
animal story with a happy ending and
to highlight those people in the world
who love and care for animals no mat
ter what the situation.
Momma Dog's story
By Jennifer Keene
Momma Dog was recently rescued
from a the home of an animal hoarder
in Blackshear GA Blind and malnour
ished, Momma Dog languished for over
13 years in unspeakable conditions on
the hoarder's back porch, neglected.
She recently gave birth to a single
puppy at the age of 13. When found by
a concerned animal welfare group, both
Momma Dog and the puppy were dehy
drated, hungry and infested with fleas
and every type of worm imaginable.
Luckily, they are now resting comfort
ably in a foster home and regaining
their health in small measures.
Momma Dog is a blond Chihuahua
mix a petite six pounds. With proper
care she’ll weigh 10 pounds or more.
She is being treated for her eye condi
tion, and worms, but we hope that she’ll
require no further treatment in 4-6
weeks. There is a small chance that she
could regain her sight after her current
medical needs are met. If not, it won’t
slow her down one bit. She is extremely
calm and, even with a puppy to protect,
is fantastic with other animals around.
You should see how her tail wags when
you call her name! Momma Dog will be
ready for a permanent loving home in
approximately two months.
Her puppy is a small Daschund-Chi-
huahua mix, approximately 10 days old.
He is now active and a bit vocal, which is
a far cry from his previous dehydrated,
lethargic condition. He will be available
for adoption in six weeks. Future special
requirements (neuter, chip, etc) will
have to be guaranteed by the adoptee
before he can leave his foster care.
The care for these animals has been
expensive and the burden lies solely
on the foster family. They struggle to
meet the needs of these animals and
the many others like them that often
find their way into home and heart. Any
donation would be much appreciated!
To donate, contact Baytree Animal
Hospital, 1619 Baytree Rd., Valdos
ta, GA 31602-3511 ((229-244-5052).
They will accept donations on behalf of
Momma Dog and her foster Mom, Jen
nifer Keene. The clinic is glad to give
updates and confirm the needed medi
cal procedures for these dogs. □
