PLANTING IRISH PO
TATOES.
I prefer a sandy loam fi' r potato
„ nH. This to lx> nt its best should !
contain a good supply of well-rot-1
ted humus, furnished either by
turning under a sod or growth of |
vegetation of some kind, or by a I
liberal application of barnyard ma- I
nuro, says a grower in the Amori
cia Agriculturist.
I generally select R lO piece of
laud for potatoes the fail previous
to the spring the crop is to be
planted, in order to give it a dress
ing of wett-totted manure if it is
not already rich enough. It is
then plowed. If early potatoes
are desired, « fair iob of getting
them in may be done by simply
running furrows the proper dis-1
’ nn be ApartJ as e§rly in the fnll as I
the soil can b« decently turned,]
dropping the seed in the bottom of I
the furrow.
If the soil in which one is oblig
ee to plant his potatoes is such
that it runs together or packs bad
ly during the winter, nothing may
be gained by fall plowing. With
soil of this kind, to get an early
■"• art in the spring one should not

moisture and prevents eaify plow
ing. Neither should the draw Tug ,
out of the manure be left until
spring, as a few days' delay then
: iv nti.ke the difference between
n- *"r> Vnn and niii* fba K * ->
not.
All things considered, a piece of
land had a good supply of humus
given it the year previous to the
one it is used as potato ground is ,
the best. Experience teaches me
that fres manurd, even, is apt to
produce scab or other disease on
the tubers.
I am fully persuaded that it is
much more protitaole for mo to
use goodsized potatoes for seed
rather than small ones. When
the former arc used, I cut as near
ly as possible *o pieces having two
eyes each, when small tubers are
used, I cut ” ' \segd end.
When late potiLovs •uVtTesire'u |
it is hardly possible to get the laud I
in too good condition. It should
be plowed and harrowed or disked
till it is so fine that each piece of
seed will lie in a bed of mellow
earth and have a covering ot the
same,
Ti e object in raising early pota
toes is to get tubers, as early ns
enough to >ass in the
market; in late potatoes, a good
yield of large, smooth tubers is de
sired and to gvi vkws uroi'ovk
must be in the beet shape possible
when planted.
In selecting the land, in decid
ing upon the variety and whether
to raise early or late potatoes one
■"■’-o ■■‘' f determine upon
his market and t, ; (e re
quirments if he would have his
venture successful.

Brother Boddiford was born in

He was well versed in the scrip

trained in such away as to rise up
and call him blessed. He seemed
to be strictly honest and temper

him to be and he was looked upon
as a honorable Christian gentle
man.
By his temperate habits ho lived
to the good old age of ninety-one
years.
We never knew a wilful wrong
of him.
His children lost a kind devoted
father, th? country lost a noble

eternal gain.
He died Nov. 25th 1906, and
