Mr 1). W. HammacK Writes Os
Solicitors Race.
Editor Liberal Enterprise,
Cuthbert Ga.
Dear Sirs:-
Permit me through the columns of
your, splendid paper to endeavor to cor
rect a mistake which it seems a few of
our friends and neighbors are laboring
under.
I refer to of the claims of one of the
candidates for the office of Solicitor
general those, of Mr Billie B. Bush who
who asserts that, if elected he will in
stitute a crimnal court calender.
We all agree that such a calendar
would be a most delightful institution
and most acceptable, not only to solici
tors but to judge, jurors, lawyers and
citizens.
Yet coinmonser.S,g question, can the
•thing be done? . . . .
Is' it practicable?
ts it can be done, if it is practicable
and desirable, why has it not been done
in the past?
Why have not such men as Judge.
Griggs and Sheffield both of whom ser
ved also as solicitor general, as Judges
Kiddow and Worrill as Solicitors Irwin
and Laing put it into execution long ere
thin?
Surely they have the executive ability
of Billy Bush'who we understand is only
25 years old.
Certainly they have far more legal
practice as well as greater knowledge
based on experience as what can and
what cannot be done, surely too these
hon jrable and esteemed officers have
been as anxious to accommodate the
people as is Mr Bush.
We hnve two candidates for solicitor
general.

Mr Bush asks the nomination be
cause of what-h > will do if elected.
Bryant Castellow asks the office upon
the recommendation of bis past rd
cord.
Mr Castellow is well aad favorable
known throughout the circut.
Until'Mr Bush's announcement last
January he was scarcely known as a
i alwyer outside of his home county.
[ Voters of the circut, we know Billie
B. Bush as the candidate, we know
Bryant Castellow as the man.
For years his life record has been un
folding before you and never has man
lived more free from reproach and cen
sure.
He-has ever followed where duty led
and always his friends have been able
to feel proud of what he has done, not
simply hopeful of what he promises to
do.
It is an old and well ’known trick of
the politician to premise in order to get
into office great beneficiol changes as
rcfults of his election, then after the
office is won some excuse for failure to
fulfill these promises.
If such able men as have served in
in the past as judges and solicitorshave
St to attempt the insii.ution
WJ caimnat court calendar, we do not
believe that a25 year old boy can suc
cessfully inaugurate it.
It is easy to promise the calendar
we do not believe the fulfi Imentwill be
i so easy.
i As a native of Mr Castellow home
county, I take pleasure in saytng that
I believe that whatever can be done for
the accommodation of judges, citizens
will be gladly done by him as Solicitor
general.
He places his record before you and
if elected “promises his best efforts in
the faithful discharge of the duties of
the office.
Thus does Byrant Castellow ask our
•ote and influence.
Let’s give them to him.
Yours Truly,
D. W. Hammack.
COLQUITT, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1912.
Billie B. Bush answers Randolph Citizen,
> D. W. Hammack and Card of Commis-
sioners of Randolph County.
To the Voters of the Pataula Circuit;
1 nave run a clean, honest and h inorable race for the pos’tion
1 if Solicitor Genual and I wi 1 win by p largn majority due to the hi Ip.
,o' my friends and the fact that I stand Shings that will benefit you.
In the papers of the Circuit last week, 1 Load an article stating that cht
Board of Commissioners of Roads and Revenues ot Randolph County,
at their .July meeting endorsed a position that I took relative to pla
-1 cing S dieitors General on a salary.
In this paper, you will doubtless see an Article signed by the Com
-1 tnissioners of mid county denying supporting any position that I
■ have taken. Had they read the article instead of glancing at it, lam
1 sure they would have seen that I spoke the truth.
’ (u July, the Board above referred to passed the following resolution,
- i copi of which was mailed to me oy the ClerK of that body, towit;
t “Resolved by the Commissioners of Roads and Revenues of Randolph
> County in legular monthly session assembled; That it is the sense of
‘ this Botrd Ist. That the office of County Treasurer throughout the
’ State be abolished.
! I 2nd. That Solicitors General through it the State be placed on a
.'salary. 3rd. That the Clerk of this bs directed to communi-
> cate this action of the Board to our Representative and Senator, and
: urge them to favor anj’ bill already introduced in the Legislature with
these objects in view, and in the event no such bill has been intro-
. duced, to prepare and introduce such bill or bills.”
Vou wi'l recall that months prior, I came out in all the papers of
the Circuit favoring the placing of Solicitors on a salary. NOW, has
not the Board endorsed the same thing that I hnve and after I had
done so. Have they not endorsed the position that I had previously
taken? Tuey did not do th ; s because I iiad done so but because it was
I foi your welfare and interest, being th: same reason for which I ad
vocated it.
I did not expect that Board to support me as a body for I well knew
. that some of the gentlemen were related to Castellow. I have not up
to this good moment tried to make it appear that they were support
ing mo. I have merely stated the truth.
Mr R. D. Gay, Chairman of the B >ard of Commissioners of Roads
and Revenues of Randolph County, Cnstellow’s uncle, evidently fore
sees the defeat of his relative and is therefore very much worried.
Another gentleman, Mr D. W. Hammack, whose family’ is cLsily
related to Castellow, takes a fling at me and at my age. I rather sue
[ pect that lam just about as competent in my profession at my age as
he was when ns old as 1 am. He says the criminal court calendar can
not be put into effect or others would already have tried it. His po.
sition is just aboutas unreasonable as for one to say a farmer can’t
raise over a hundred bushels of corn per acre because it was not done
hero ten years ago. A Criminal Court calendar is used in the State
of Alabama and the larger cities of Georgia successfully at present.
We have been having Civil Court calendars in our circuit for some
time. It has been a success. It can be done and will be done if I
have the opportunity’ to show you. I have not been so presumptions
as to say that I could institute this charge alone but if you will refer
to my statements in the papers, you will find that I said “with the
' consent of the Court.” 1 have a high respect for the court and would
not presume to try to interfere with a branch of it with which I have
no connection. lam proud to say, however, that I believe our court
‘ will gladly, at all times, he ready and willing to do all in its power for
I the benefit and welfare of the people.
I Some distinguished personage, who hides bis relationship to Caste!-'
loiv from you by subscribing himself A Randolph Citizen, “other pa
pers, please copy”, also sees Ca-tellows defeat and in desperation says'
that lam too young. The jo j needs a great lawyer like Castellow.
He says that I was not known outside of my county until January Ist
' How many of you ever of Castellow until he ran against C>l 1
Laing? How many cases have you heard him try since ais defeat?
j Think them up! j
If he is such a lawyer, and I make no reflections for I have a high
'regard for him as a gentleman, look on the Civil Court Calendar of
Randolph Supeiior Court at the last term and see if he is marked as
■ Attorney for a single client out of at least forty cases.
i Then look and see how many criminal cases he had in said county
lin th u last four years. I then, ask you to look and see whether lam
in the active practice in Mi’ler County. Upon examination of all
I die D ickets of Superior and City Courts, you will find that my firm,
t Bush & Stapleton handle as much business a« any of the lawyers of
jour bar. You will find that the 25 years old biy, who is trying to rise
in li f e, is doing more practice than Cistel’ow.
Judging from a news item in the Albany Herald, headed Cuthbert,
Ga, 1 observe that Col. Castellow did himself proud in a certain crim
inal case there last week. If he did, I congratulate him. I am glad.
he made a splendid effort but I am informed that the article above re
ferred to was written uo by a relative of Castellow for the purpose of
helping Castelow in his race. The article is characterized b■ a Cuth
bert perion who knows, as a “farcical attempt to help Col Castellow
n his race for Solicitor General” and also as “a highly colored story
of one man’s part in a not so important murder case.”
It seems that the relatives of my good friend Castellow are despei
ate because they can’t put all of their family in office.
I appeal to every cue of yon to vote for me because I stand for
Something that will benefit you. I hope to climb life’s ladder and
you can count on me living up to mv promises if it is possible for a
human being to do so. You know 1 have run a clean race. I have
treated my oponent fairly and as a true gentleman should. I have
sincerely spoken of him in the highest terms and now I ask mv friends
to resent these attacks made on me by the relatives of Castellow. Go
to the polls and vote for me,
Faithfully yours,
Billie B. Bush.

Pataula Circuit.
I have known Mr Castellow since
early boyhood.
A large portion of bis common
school education was secured here.
His very boyhood was marked
with tra’ts of the very highest
moral type.
His responsiveness to duty was
more than noticible, it was de
lightful for older people, interes
ted in the growth and development .
of children to observe.
I never knew an act of his life!
that tended towards meanness or ■
even rudeness.
After completing his education I
he came back and was uuaminous-1
ly elected principal of our school
which position he hold .intil he!
rcsignt dto take up other work I
The opportunity of filling so
important an office with such men |
as B. T Castellow is rare, so rare
that if there is th j slightest reason j
in his favor over an opponent fully I
his equal in every other sense, then
we should certainly give it to B. I
T. Castellow.
In examining the reasons favor
ing Mr Castellow over Mr Bush I
not considering his larger ability j
by reason of greater experience |
and more mature years which is'
worth so much in executive force, I
we find that Mr Castellow has ap- ,
plied for this office one before but
running against one of the best
Solicitors that has ever filled the'
office he was by a narrow margin
turned down.
The hardest decision I was ever;
forced to make was between Laing
and Castellow. It did appear that
Laing had occupied the position
long enough and was hampering
well developed abilities for higher
positions.
But I think a wise and thought
ful people who want to have the
office well filled and at the same
take care of laudable ambition will
have no trouble in deciding this
contest in favor of B. T. Castellow
then later on in due course of
merit they will take care of Billy
Bush who is much younger ind
' really needs a. little more of the
j ripening process in order tl.at his
services may be thoroughly mutri
cious in fu-t term service and
