At The Fountain.
By Elizabeth Maury Coombs
Iron feet on the hot highway,
Gray lips caked with dust,
Silent and travel-worn come we
Athrist to the fountain’s rust!
Dry as the dust of yesterday,
And how can-we understand?
Dey? When we’ve come with our
burden far
Over the heat-cursed land.
Brothers of Speech, stop, hear us;
We less-r folk than you
Grave but the 11. w of the vital
stream
In the fountain’s pool anew
Patient and true companions,
Sharers of all your toil,
God sealed our lips that we make
no moan
When he chained us to the soil
Ere you plunge each day in the
cooling flood,
Think of our burning thirst,
Think of our parching clai-caked
lips/
And give us our life-draught
first.--Our Dumb Animals.
