Mrs. Felton Says
She Was Buncoed
In Bank Failure
First Woman U. S. Senator Milker
Appeal to Legislature in Hank
of Donalsonville Case.
Atlanta Correa undent in Albstiy
Herald:
Atlanta, (1a.,.1 uly 22 —ln a voice
abe could not control, and with
tears in her eyes, Mrs. W H. l'“|.
lon, former U S,Senator, appeared
before the Fiona? committee on
banks and hanking today to plead
for justice.
In asking for a hearing b»for<
the committee, Mrs. Felton deolar
ed: ‘‘l warn you that if a widow,
90 years old, who has been bunco
ed out of her money, cannot be
beard by her Legislature, I wi 1
publish it from the Great Lakes to
the Gulf of Mexico.”
Mrs. Felton appeared before the
committee to oppose its giving a
favorable report to n measure which
would amend the bankin ’laws. She
declared it would put too much
power in the hands of the superin
tendents of bank When she was
given a hearing she touched upon
her connection with Bank of Don
alsonville.
A measure which would’ve reliev
ed her of a $1,500 assessmen; as a
stockholder in the Donalsonville
institution was recently iniroduoed
in the legislature, but we., unfavor
ably reported by a committee.
Mra. Felton dtClared that when
she found she could not s II the
stock in the bank which she own
ed, she went to the Supt. of banks
and asked what was the matter with
the bank. He replied, she said, that
the bank was in very good condi
tion. This was shortly before the
bank closed, she stated.
“A bank that steals ought to b“
penalized, and the banking authori
ties ought to find out who got the
money,” she said. “It isn’t right
that a 9C year old widow, who has
done the best she knew how to
serve her state, and who has been
buncoed out of her money, should
be further penalize.”
“I appeal >o you for justice,”
she concluded.
