A Dangerous Drive
ii
Early this morning the editress
left town to go for Mrs Luther
Kimbrel who lives out beyond the
home of Mr. A. B. Chapman.
Just before reaching the resi
dence of Mr Chapman, the graded
road from Colquitt runs ovi a pike
or embankment (not very wide)
between deep cavities said to have
been caused by lime su ks
Recent rains, filling the sinks
had caused the waters to meet
over the road.
A heavy fog obstructed the vis
ion; but the driver stopped the oar
at the margin of the water to see
if any other oar had left tracks in
attempting to pass, through this
water which hurl submerged the
\ road. The trscks of one car were
» 'plainly visible.
The spectacles and wind shield
were wiped carefully, the Ford
put in low gear; and alone tin
editress entered that perilous sea
of waters, which could not be seen
from the entrance. After slowly
rolling in, the driver saw the wast<
of waters and wanted to reverse
and back; but she has never learn
ed to keep the oar straight in back
lug. There seemed to be noth
ing to do, except to press slowly
’ forward, realizing that to drive too
near either side might mean to
sink from sight. Logs and limbs
were floating in and near the road
way. A near by fence was the
surest guide. We remember that
the toad was parallel with this. It
was impossible to see the road,
just a guess by the fence and the
tops of bushes, which could be
seen occasionally, With the car
at times moat drowned out, over
debris, and through washouts it
alowly wended its way.
Finally, after what seemed an
experience too horrible to be true,
the waters were left behind,
As we drove out a negro boy
standing on the bank watching,
was asked if any other car had
passed through that place. He
said, “One.” “Who was it?” we
asked.
“I dun no. *Twuz acullerd gen,
man.”
Driving on we thought how
could we ever thank God enough
for our deliver; but that we would
surely find another way borne.
Those living in that locality re.
4hms to pa as through the waters
with teams; but there is not sign
to warn those not familiar with
the danger, except the waters
which were obscured that morn
ing by the fog.

If severe winds blow in March
thia year, it can be said truly that
it had a forerunner in February
which brought strong winds; but
despite all the disagreeable weath
er leaves and blossoms claim the
attention of those who love the
beautiful things in nature.
There is only one way to get
ready for immortality, and that >s
to love this life, and live it as
bravely, and faithfully, and cbeer
