lified to serve

I have been
appointed t o

and am a member of Alpha Gam
ma Delta eorority in which I have
held the offices of Corresponding

In addition to the above qualifi

on Wednesday, and remember —
VOTE JANIE for SENIOR SEC
RETARY!

“Love is STRANGE.” But, ac
tually, if you really think about it,
so is a treasurer. Although my hu
mor may be a
little weak, I as
sure you, my
deter m i n a-
tion in wanting
to serve next
year’s senior
class as treasur
er is very strong.
I n considering
factors necessa
ry to qualify a person for an of
fice, you will find determination of
purpose, realization and acceptance
of the responsibility of the office,
willingness to work to one’s maxi
mum, and the devotion of one’s
time, energy, and ideas of major
importance. On these bases, I rest
my qualifications for the office of
Senior Class Treasurer.
Susan Strange
Junior Class
President
Robert Belloir
I wish to announce my candi
dacy for the office of Junior Class
President I realize the importance
of having a com
petent and res
ponsible candi
date to fill the
office of the
p r e s i d e n -
cy. I further
realize that the
person elected
to this office wilt
have to be res
ponsible, deicated and able to
make decisions. It is for these rea
sons that I ask for your vote.
I feel that I am well qualified
for the office for I served to the
best of my ability as past Presi
dent of the Sophomore Class. I
take a keen Interest in the affairs
of the S.G.A. and as your repre
sentative I promise to act in the
best interest of the student body.
I have no bias concerning the af
filiates and non-affiliates so I feel
that a vote for Robert Belloir will
be a vote for fair play and im
partial representation. I further
consider it an honor to act as
your president and will continue
to put forth 100 per cent in the
execution of my duties. Remember
to circle Robert Belloii come elec
tion day this Spring Quarter
P.8. You wont regret it! ! f

A candidate for any office of stu
dent government might expect to
assume the responsibility of repre
senting the Mercer student body as
a whole, and each particular office
also entails certain specific respon
sibilities. The Junior Class Presi
dent is responsi
ble for the ini
tiation and exe
cution of plans
for the entire
Homeco mini
week; and, of
course, any pol-
icies directly
concerning the
junior class also
come under bis auspices. As a can
didate for this office, I would direct
my attention to theee matters as
well as bearing in mind in this
capacity the aforementioned re
sponsibility to the student body at
large.
Any foreknowledge of student
government workings would be to
the advantage of a class president;
and, having served on S.G.A. dur
ing this past year, I feel that the
experience afforded me during this
tenure would prove beneficial in my
efforts to effect original programs
which have not lost complete con
tact with tradition, especially in the
case of Homecoming activities. 1
hove also been a participant in sev
eral other campus activities which
would bring me closer to the stu
dent interests and opinions. My
primary objective as Junior Class
President would be to place myself
in such a position as to be able
to interpret theee interests and
opinions and work toward initiating
programs for the common pleasure
and welfare of the student body.

Class of 1970:
I believe there is no doubt that
at Mercer campaigns and campaign
speeches have
little influence
on elections ex
cept for the
freshman elec
tions. Everyone
knows the can
didates fair-
ly well and the
election is mere
ly a voting pro
cess.
There are only two points 1 want
to make. 1 will attend the Student
Government meetings and we will
have the best homecoming ever
next year.
Sincerely,
Glenn A. Kirbo
Candidate for Jr. Class
Pres.
Bobby Potter
The office of Junior Class Presi
dent involves not only an SGA seat,
but also the responsibility of the
1969 Homecoming. It also demands
much time, planning, and the hand
ling of several thousand dollars.
I feel capable of assuming these
various responsibilities to my ex
perience in this type of work. I
have previous-
served in several
executive posi
tions in high
school and com
munity activi
ties. Presently I
hold the IFC of
fice of Rush Co
ordinator and
fraternity office
of secretary. Both of these offices,
especially the former, involve the
handling of large sums of money.
They both require sound planning,
promptness, and good faculty re
lations.
These same requirements ere
necessary to successfully fulfill the
duties of Junior Claes President
The experience that I have gained
would be a great asset to me. Yet
these qualities, in order to be valu
able, must be supported by a sin
cere desire to work. I know that I
possess this mr—ary desire and
Vice-President
Ronald Childs
A great man once said, “I am
involved in mankind." These words
of John Donne can sum up my as
pirations and hopes in running for
an office, for I
want to become
involved in stu
dent life and
government. I
have never had
any respect for
a person who is
lackadai-
sical. for I have
always been a
worker, one who thrills at seeing
dreams and hopes turned into rea
lity.
I am running for this office be
cause I want to work for the stu
dents. I have seen too many peo
ple elected, who after they are
elected, they do nothing, only sit
back and feast on a love of pres
tige. I would not run for this office
if I did not want to work.
Some of my ideas are in the form
of a bigger and better homecominR.
1 want a better concert, a better
dance, and a homecoming in which
the atudents have a biger voice.
Other ideas for the Junior Class in
clude a Junior Fling, a weekend
for the juniors and their dates. In
the long run I want to see the Jun
ior Class become the must active
group on campus in 1968-1969.
I repeat again. I want to be elect
ed because I want to work. Yet the
choice is up to you. the voters, an
important choice to you and to
Mercer.
Sincerely yours,
Ronald E. Childs
Van Hale
My name is Van Hale, and I am
your next Junior class Vice-Presi
dent. You may wonder why I speak
with such confidence. The reasons
may be classified under four head
ings: confidence, pride, representa
tion and experience.
1) Confidence—First, it is neces
sary for me to have confidence in
myself, or I could not expect you
to have enough confidence in me
to give me your vote.
2) Pride—When we chose Mer
cer as a place to continue our edu
cation, we should have had in mind
not only an in-
i n t e 1 1 e c-
tual growth, but
also a social
growth. When
speaking of so
cial, one usually
thinks of par
ties, but this al
so implies tak
ing part in the
affairs of something we are part
of. I know that out homecoming
is not “Big League" as is a home
coming centered around the pagen-
try, suds and blood of big college
football, but we are a part of Mer
cer, and we should be proud of our
Alma Mater. This pride includes
spirit not only for our Homecoming
basketball game, but also for all
the activities of the school. The
main function of the Junior class
is Homecoming, and this year I
pledge to add events that will make
of it something to be proud, hoping
at the same time to add to the
overall Mercer spirit. “You only
get out as much as you put in.”
3) Representation — As Vice-
President of the Junior Class, T
will hold a seat in the S.G.A., and
I will therefore be able to represent
you, the Junior class members.
Since we were freshmen, we have
been complaining about the many
faults of Mercer. Some of us may
have written suggestions, or may
have spoken to an S.GA. member
about the problems, but nothing
would very much appreciate the
opportunity to sank for the Junior
Ham. ;
ever changed. The rest of us were
satisfied to complain, but never to
take action. 1 am tired of seeing
Mercer cut down, yet seeing noth
ing done to improve the situation.
As your Vice-President, I will at
tend every meeting, represent you
to the best of my ability, and per
sonally receive your complaints and
put them before the S.G.A. for
discussion and improvement After
the election, I will take action for
you, not glory, and I will work tq
improve our condition through
your suggestions. I will act as liai
son between you and the S GA in
order to make Mercer the type in
stitution you want it to be.
4) Experience—You may wonder
about my qualifications or my past
experience in reforming school af
fairs. While at Mercer I have sim
ply made mental notes towards im
provements, but at Lanier High
School 1 served as President of the
Student Body my senior year. Dur
ing that year, my administration
and 1 undertook two major reforms,
one of which was completed that
year, and the other which was com
pleted during the summer before
school reopened the next fall, and
before the school was destroyed by
fire. (No connection between the
reforms and the fire, I assure you.)
I therefore feel that I have enough
insight into Mercer life to recog
nize needed reforms, enough ex
perience to know how to success
fully carry them out, and enough
desire to do it.
I hope that you are now familiar
with my platform. I am looking
forward to meeting each of you
during the campaign to discuss our
plans for a more successful and
progressive Mercer next year.
Bud Maddox
Fellow members of next year's
junior class.
I would like to announce my can
didacy for the office of vice-presi
dent of the junior class. I am not
running for this office out of any
desire for personal glory, I am run
ning because of a strong desire and
willingness to serve you my fellow
students and friends.
If elected, I would not take over
my office completely unexperienced
in the affairs of
the SGA. I say
this because 1
am the only
candidate with a
year of experi
ence on the
SGA. I also at
tended last sum
mer's Waverly
Conferenc e
where the SGA and other student
leaders talked over problems with
the. faculty and administration. In
addition I will be in Biloxi, Missi
ssippi this week at the SUSGA Con
vention where SGA delegates from
schools all over the South meet to
discuss and compare their SGA or
ganization as well as their accom
plishments. This experience and
knowledge of SGA operations will
enable me to serve you better as
vice-president.
Since the junior class is in charge
of homecoming, I will work, if el
ected, with the president of the
junior class and other members of
the homecoming committee to make
next year's homecoming better than
ever.
Although I live at home instead
of in the dorms, I feel just as much
a part of the campus as a resident
student as I have developed a love
for Mercer, her stuednts and far
ulty. I would appreciate your vote
on election day Thank you.
