Twenty-seven students of the Walter F. George School of
Law at Mercer University were on the Dean's List for Distin

comprise 12 percent of the student body in the law school, ac
cording to Dean Meade Feild

List were:

The Students
This idea of newness does
not only apply to the faculty
but to students as well. Now
on Campus, students are being
threatened by a newness and
are not baring up under the
conditions. A case in point is
the Greek System at Mercer
which is probably stronger
than it ever has been before,
not because of this idea of
"more brotherhood, but be
cause it is afraid, defensive
and threatened by the very
presence of Blacks on this
campus. Yes it has come
down to the point where 100
years of tradition is slowly go
ing down the drain. What was
good for mom and dad can no
longer bare up.
Blacks represent this new
ness on campus and the Greek
system can’t adjust to the
times or the situation. Actual
ly it’s amusing to see the
system gradually but surely
die. The death of the Greek
system is inevitable if it re
mains as is.
The Blacks on the other
hand also reflect this aspect of
fear and threat. They've solidi
fied and have not quite ade
quately adjusted to the situa
tion. But it is as much a re
sponsibility of Blacks as well
as Whites to accept change
and this newness. Instead both
races are at odds with each
other. In the end neither can
win. I’ve come to see this
struggle of resistance as simply
ridiculous.
Going back to my theme,
everyone is playing this silly
game — the administration
and faculty with the students,
the students with students,
and the University with the
public. Many times I think
there are two images of Mer
cer being expressed. One is
that of the students which is
most important and the other
is the padded' image of the ad
ministration. 1 sincerely be
lieve that if Mercer didnT
strive so hard to conceal iLself
but attempted be as is, the
problems of rentention and re
cruitment of students, the
public image, and other prob
lems would not be problems.
