Assistant Pastor to C.J. Hicks. On
October 7. he gave a sermon during
Chapel break here at Mercer. He

Interesting, ’’he didn't expect as
many people, students to come and
hear the old fire and brlmestone
service."
Mr. Greene en|oys working with the
Mercer students. As a father of live,
he understands that "the students try
to act like they know what they are

Students perform
poorly on Teacher
Cejiification Tests
By Divio Forehind
Figures released recently by the
State Department ol Education reveal
that 24 percent of the education
students at Mercer in Macon fall on
their lirst attempt at teacher
certification tests, placing Mercer's
failure rate above the state average.
Dr. Janet Busbom. former acting
chairman ol the Mercer Education
Department, described the tests in an
interview with the Cliitttr and cited
reasons for Mercer's above-average
failure rate.
According to Dr. Busboom, the
figures released by the State
Departmentare a compilation ol many
types ol certification tests. The tests
vary both according to the grade level
at which the student desires to teach,
and to the area In which he/she
specialises.
Dr. Busboom stated that the
primary reason lor Mercer's below-
average performance on the tests Is
the high percentage ol transient
students taking the test. Graduate
students with degrees from other
colleges who take even one course at
Mercer are recorded as Mercer
students on the test records. BuSboom
also noted that Mercer students have
olten performed poorly on the specific
sections ol the tests which cover
material taught by other departments
ol tW Col lege ol Liberal Arts.
On the positive side. Busboom
observed that Mercer's education
department is very strong In the area
ol field experience lor aspiring
teachers. The "multicultural" field
experience program at Mercer has
been cited as exemplary.
