Cultural Arts Fair begins Monday
By ELAINE FLORO
SUIT Writer
Beginning on May 1. 1989. the
StLdent Union Activities Board will
sponsor the Cultural Arts Fair
which will be located in the Student
Center, and it will end on May 5,
1989. This is the third year that
S.U.A.B. has sponsored this pro
gram with Eddie Sanford supervis
ing the activities.
The Cur has changed since last
year. “The faculty thought that it
wasn’t really coherent last year.**
said Sanford. Last year, they plann
ed different activities on the dif
ferent days, but there is a European
theme this year that will tie
everything together. Eddie states.
“We are giving them one culture
and presenting it to them (the
students and faculty).’’
All the acts either come from
Europe or have played in Europe
at some time. The festivities begin
at 4 p.m. on Monday with OBAZ
which are intense visual acts with
knives, fire, and other materials.
S.U.A.B. is also sponsoring a
movie that night at 7 p.m. and 9
p.m. called “Phantom of the
Oper.” On Tuesday, the excite
ment continues with another
S.U.A.B. movie playing at 7 p.m.
only called “Fanny and Alex
ander;’’ while that is showing. Play
with a Tiger will be performed in
the co-op at 8 p.m. It is a three act
play. The next night a 8 p.m.. the
Shady Grove Band, which is a Blue
Grass band that has played in
Europe, wil be featured in the co
op; this band is originally from
Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Thursday will host different events
such as acquhbcs-oo-the-quad with
Catfish Row, a two-man band
made up of Rob Sumowski and
Leighton Moore, at 11 a.m.-12
rvooo , the European dinner in the
cafeteria, and Play With a Tiger at
8 p.m. Friday consists of many
other events such as the Southwest
High School Jazz Band at 7 p.m.
in the co-op; the Jazz Festival in
Tattnall Park from 3:30-7:30; and
at 8:30 p.m. the Bermuda Triangle
band will be playing.

Roberts to become athletic dorm
By DANA OWENS
Staff Writer
C.D. Merricks. director of hous
ing and Residence Life, said that
Roberts Hall will become an
athletic dormitory beginning in the
1989-1990 school year.
Currently. Roberts Hall is a
female dormitory bousing 35 peo
ple. If Roberts were to becme an
athletic dormitory, the second floor
would be for males, and the third
for females. The ground level floor
would remain offices. The
matron's desk would be moved to
the second floor. Females would
have to sign in at the desk in order
to watch television, located on the

players wiU be grouped into

Merricks sees this plan as hav
ing several advantages. The fust
benefit would be that this plan
would save Mercer approximately
SI500. This is duem the fact that
during preseason, ahd Christinas
break, athletes remain on campus,
males in New Men’s and females
in Roberts. Rather than having to
heat the entire building of New
Mens in order to accommodate
under thirty people, under the
recommended plan Roberts would
have to be the only building folly
operational. And. because the
business offices are located within
the same building, the building is
already open also during the
off-season.
The second advantage to having
Roberts become an athletic dor
mitory is due to the fact that 25
more male spaces are needed for
next year. Roberts, in Merricks
opinion, is the easiest and least
costly solution to the housing
problem.
Many of the students currently
residing in Roberts Hall state that
they are opposed to the idea. Sherry
Nip said. **I dislike it. I am going
to have to give up living in the
dorm 1 have lived in for the entire
ty of my school career. This is my
t)ome.“ Heather McConnel said.
“It’s like a family here.. .it’s like
breaking up a family.** Denise
Oakley added. “I can’t believe they
are kicking non-athletes out of this
dorm.”
How o
If you have played some hands in
the dorm or at home, you can
quickly become familiar with
duplicate bridge. Someone will be
on hand half an hour before the
game to explain scoring and how
to play bridge at a tournament. If
you're ready to improve your
game, plan to atend the free bridge
lectures one hour before gametime.
Everything will be free—entry for
the games, lectures, and delicious
refreshments. Something for
nothing? What’s the catch? The
Collegiate Georgia Bndge Tourna
ment is being totally funded and
supported by the local chapter of
the American Contract Bridge
League (Georgia Unit 114). They
hope you wiU attend the Collegiate
Georgia Bridge Tournament at no
coat and then continue to play at
your local dub. Thte’s » good deal.
Enjoy a weekend of recreation at
no cote and you may discover a
sport that will enrich your life.
Please tet us know if you will need
tstiteanrr with housing.
