Tlie Way Democrats do things. When a democrat turns traitor to the Con stitution, and misrepresents his c nstituency iu Congress, he is promptly repudiated. Bar clay of Penn, voted with the Republicans for the Army Bill with the abolition proviso.— What is the consequence ? The democrats of his district have thrown him overboard, and nominated anew man—known to be sound. That’s the way the democracy do things. But how is it with onr opponents ? Do they re pudiate their men for such conduct ? Never ! Henry Winter Davis, a southern Know Noth ing member of this Congress, from Maryland, voted with Barclay, but he is not turned out of his post. Oh no :he will be a very popular man with the Know Nothings— Federal Un ion. &g”Tn his speech at Massachusetts ‘ Old Xine” Know Nothing Whig Convention. Mr. Robt. C. Winthrop remarked, on giving his adhesion to Fillmore : “In my experience thus far, I have voted for a President of the United States once with otdy four States, and once with only inv own State, and am prepared, if need be, to try how 4t feels without anyStafe at all.” He will have a chance to try it this time. Fillmore not in l'owa —A letter from lowa City to the New York Tribune states that the American State Council had just met there, and agreed to support Fremont and Dayton. That looks like Fillmore carrying lowa ! .-.*►. Washington', Sept-. 23.—The Natiional In telligencer has concluded to hoist the Fillmore and Donalson fiag. York, Sept. 23.--The Citizens of Concord, N H have refused a public reception to President Pierce, on the occasion of his con templated visit. We see it stated that Mr Haven, of j (the late law partner of Mr lil more,) declines to be a candidate for re-elec tion. The ;resumption is, that Mr. Haven, is feai'ful of the ballot box.— Con 4* Rep Washington, Sept. 18. —It lias been ascer tained that the Administration is officially ad vised that the project of a treaty between Great Britain and the United States relative to the Central American question has been agreed upon. A copy has been received, but its contents have not transpired. Mr. Dallas had full power given him, notwithstanding the statements to the contrary. The Cotton Crop on Red Rivf.r. —The Nat chit cche* Chronicle, of the 6th nit., says : “The extremely hot ad dry weather of the last six weeks has, we fear, seriously impaired the value of the cotton crop in this section of the State. the forms are falling in great numbers. It is so !afe in the season that no great fears are entertained from the catter pillar ; on seme plantat ons they are said to have appeared, but nor in sufficient numbers to injure the crop thus far. On the whole, there will be much below an average crop, both of corn and cotton, this year in this Pa rish ; and we Ie rn that the same may be said of the crops in Dt Soto and Sabine. WeS* The New t'-rleens Picayune of 19ih inst says a shark was recently cam h below that city. The monster measured seventeen feet ten inches in length from tail to snout, and nine feet in circumference. He had seven row r s of teeth, three of the rows being almost hidden in the upper gums. His liver exactly filled up a beef barrel. In his paunch was found the body of a man. in a half decomposed State. So far as could be judged, the corpse was that of a. well dress ed mau, of medium size—white shirt with pearl buttons course silk unde shirt, cotton socks, shoes nearly new, of the Congress gaiter kind. The .‘•hark had also in his stomack several pieces of old canvass, such as are used by ves sels on their rigging. The jaw bone of this sea pirate is now exhi bited in New Orleans. It is large enough to take in a sugar barrel. A Bloody Indian War Apprehended in the Northwest Bth ult., gives the intelligence of a threatened war between the Sioux and Chippewa Indians, partly growing out of a recent murder commit ted by the Chippewas among the Sioux, their hereditary enemies, and partly from a misun derstanding between the Indian agent and the Sioux in regard to the delivering over of cer tain young men engaged in forays into the Chippewa country. The superintendent d<- inanded those men ; on the refusal to com p J y, the annuities were suspended. Afterwards they complied, but for some reason they have not received their money. The consequence is, a bad state of feelings exist. The Sioux demanded the young men, and threaten a war of extermination against the Chippewas.” Arrest of the Head of the Vigilance Com mittee.—Deputy Sheriff Crombie this morning arrested and brought before the Supreme Court, William T. Coleman, President of tfie San “Francisco Vigilance Committee, now tempor arily in this city. Coleman was arrested on complaint of James > R. Maloney, late cf Culafornia, who states in ! his affidavit that while performing his duty in ! guarding the states arms of California against 1 the Vigilance Committee, he was seized, hand-1 cuffed and finally expelled the State by that! lawless organization, to his great personal and ; pecuniary damage. He therefore begs that Coleman, the leader of the Committee, who is reputed to be very | wealthy, may be held to bail for sloo, oooj The curt, however, released the prisoner on giving bail fi r $50,000. ‘he Vigilance Com mittee are now bcgining to reap the conseque nces of their acts. —N Y Evcniny Post , 1 tith inst. OXE-1 ENTH OF A ‘■'ECOND FROM DEATH—It will bercmemberd that the Rev. Mr SeUwood. of the Episcopal Church missionary to Oregon, was in the P nama mas-acre, and reported among tie dead.
