THE COtJTt EJECTION.
Last Wcdnesdaj’, the election for
comity officers was held, and for all
cxc*pt Surveyor and Coroner, it was
the most spirited contest we ever
•aw. Each of the candidates for
Ordinary, Clefk, Sheriff, Receiver,
Collector and Treasurer, had their
THE VOTE-BITYIKG EVIL.
The statement is very generally
made that at the election in this
county on Wednesday, the votes of
the negroes were freely purchased.
While it would be difficult, perhaps,
to get evidence to support this state
ment, there are very few, doubtless,
who do not believe it. Assuming
that it is true, does it not- present a
subject which ought to arrest the at
tention and command the earnest
consideration of every citieen who
feels an interest in the welfare of this

interests, and the scenes at times i nes8 0 ft,he negroes to sell their vot es,
during the day would have_ made a ; an ev q that justifies a feeling of un
easiness, and even alarm, for the fu-
B&rgaias for Evorybody!
At The
Comanche Indian blush. We do not
attach blame to any one, and neither
do we mean to play upon words by
saying it was a "spirited contest,”
t ot from the amount -of beastly
drunkenness seen around the couit
house, and on our streets,it was ap
parent that the "spirits” of John
.Barleycorn bad made a very uncal
led for interference in the canvass.
We wish to state now, in the be
ginning of our career as editor and f
proprietor of the Stab, that we shall
make an earnest and contined effort
to root the evil out of Douglas coun
ty, and if the law abiding and Cod
fearing citiaens will help us,the next
election to be held in the
county will lie to wipe the whisky
stain from oui proud escutcheon,a d
old Douglas will be placed cn the
roll of honor among her sister pro
hibition counties.
An idea of the enormous quantity
of “Bug-juice” that is being daily
used to facilitate the manufacture
of widows aDd orphans, may be
gathered from the following facts :
In the bonded warehouses in the
city of New York, alone, there are
i.ow 14,594,406 gallons of whiskey,
on which the revenue will have to
be paid, and the whiskey taken out
during the first six months of this
$2,600,000
ture ? it must not be forgotten that
a very large proportion of our pop
ulation is negroes. In many com
munities, and in several of the States,
the negroes are in the majority.
Owing to their want of education
and lack of intelligence, there is no
prospect that they will soon be influ
enced in casting their ballot*, by a
desire to choose those who are best
qualified to become public servant*.
A few dollars seem to them to bo far
more desirable than good officials or
good government. j
They will, therefore, vote for those
who will pay them the most, A j
man with money and some white!
following will be able, hy purchasing
the negro vote, to secure almost any
office to which he may aspire. The
consequence will be that tnose best
qualified to serve the public will be
crowded out of the offices. The
officials will be, those who care very
little for the prosperity of tbeir cit
ies, counties or States. They will
call around them those who are in
fluenced by similar motives. Is it
not easy to see how deplorable the
condition of affairs will be under
such circumstances? It may be
said, and with truth, that votes have
been purchased in every part of the
eonn ry. It must, be remembered,

this same amount will have to be paid State is extremely small as compar-
every month, until the bonded peri
od expires. This Tarrantula anti
dote when taken out of the ware
houses, is rectified, doctored and
adulterated,until by the time the
poor devils of drinkers get a swig
at it, the volume has increased about
four-fold, and its capacity for orphan
making to such an extent that a man
drinking it is in a fine plight for
whipping bis wife or cursing his
grand-mother. The amount that the
whiskey held under bond in New
York will bring at lowest wholesale
prices. Would pay the poll tax of ev?
ery man in the llniied States. Sup
plement this with the far more exten
sive warehouses of Chicago, St.
Louis, Cairo, Cincinnati, Louisville
and many other places, and you will
see that unless the traffic is stopped,
it will be a long time before corn
and meat are cheap enough to eat.
We have never taken any public
•land for or against the question of
prohibition, bat elnce the scenes en
acted at the election last week, we
are determined to make it a war to
the knife, until the Strse is rooted
out ot oar eounty. We expect to
be a tborn in the flesh of the advo
cates of dram-drinking, from now
UBtil the day when the governor of
this proud old Commonwealth shall
issue his proclamation prohibiting
the sale of intoxicating liquors in
Douglas county. W e shall pour shot
and shell into their camps, and we
ask every ready of the Stab to see
if he or sue ©au’t send us one or more
names to add to our subscription list,
in order that the good seeds we may
he able to sow may have the wider
field of usefulness. Let us see how
many will help us.
We have opened our columns to a
temperate discu sion of the prohibi
tion question on both sides; but we
must admonish the writers to avoid
personalities and to confine themsel
ves to reasonable limits, Don,t “spin
It out” but condense as much as pos-
jfihle. Nothing taxes an editor’s
equanimity and space so much as
useless'elaboration. We shall rigidly
adhere to these two requirements.
Tbeaunfounde report that Mr.
CJevelnd is pr sident of a free
trade club in Buffalo has brought
to recollection the fact thatMr.
Garfield was once a member of
such a club but the Republicans
never thought of that while he
was their candidate for the presiden
cy-
ed to the percentage in any one of
the Southern States, and the eviia to
be apprehended in Northern Slates
from this source, therefore, are pro
portionally less. Now is the time to
strike at tins vote-buying evil-
while it is in its infancy;- If it s
let alone, the time may riot be distant
when it will reach giant proportions,
and will be beyond the reach of ail
ordinary remedies. At the present
stage of the evil, even men with hon
est purposes may be induced to coun
tenance it, rather than submit t > b-s
defeated by purchased votes; but if
the evil is allowed to flourish, useti
of good intentions will stand no
chance whatever for getting an office,
