In the Conference, on a bright and beautilul

discour*■*. A very gracious influence , rested
upon the preacherand hiscongr'egati m. Af-
t< rwards the thought came likea sudden in
spiration what the colored man had said. 1
note this merely as a singular coincidence
and do not stress the idea ot anything like
a prophetic impulse. In this connection 1
may be permitted to refer to some other in
cidents of my early ministry. I had gone on
a visit tomy relatives in White county. An
appolntmentwas mads forme to preach at
Mossy Creek on a Sabbath evening. The old
church imo which I had been carried in raj
:mothers arms and as a little black headed
boy, had list medio the wonderful preaching
of times. Sitting on the back a teat were two
old servants—Uncle George and Aunt Lucy
whom m.v father once owned. Th ey hac
hebrd of the appointment, three miles aw. y
and had walked to the church. My old glor -

After announcing my text and proceeding
for a time, I suddenly forgot all its divisions ,
and was i n the act of sitting down, when all I
atones the next division flashed across my
mind like a star amid the murky gloom. I
proceeded without interruption to the dose.
My uncle concluded, end and we had a very
precious time. Alter dismission those two,
old co’ored people met me near the pulpit ,
and rejoiced and shouted. Uncle George said ;
With his face all aglow, “I have nursed him I
in my arms.” I shall never forget the scone;!
the old man went off shouting. He was a j
preacher and class leader among his people
was loved and respected. The first time he
heard my uncle preach, the house was crow
ded. It was night and rain n ,be wrapped ins ,
d®ak around him and stood near the door.
Mv uncle said it did him a great deal of gooi.
The last time 1 saw him wasin Data Ion ega, he
j,ad on a found breasted coat and flocked like
; apatriarch. At the little town of Kmickels-
vitle on the memorable night when the mete
ors fell, bad men gathered abouthim begging
him 10 pray. But death freed uncle George
long before emancipation came. I have no
doubt hut he is now mingling with the spir

Another colored woman lean never forgetj

her. Shewalched us with a loving interest

She seemed always to act and feel as one ot
the family, closely identified every way, and
mingling with our joys and sorrows. She
outlived my mother and several members of
the family. I was living a hundred miles
away. I learned that she was sick, and no
hope of her recovery. I boaided the train
in Marietta, from thence to Dalton, and five
miles into the country to my fathers. She
rejoiced greatly to sec me—said she “Kncv-
that this child would come.” That wasa,
home word, and would bring up memories of
mother and the long ago. I took ray seal by’
her bed and wept like a chil 1. Dear old Aunt
Sally knew hut ti ttle of slavery in the ab
stract, kindly treated always, tenderly cared
for durtugthe three months of her last sick
ness, and then gently laid away to rest till
the resurrection morning. Now that I am
approaching the dark river, and the shadows
are lengthening behind me, among the many
I hope to greet on the yonder shore. 1 would
notleave out those who watched over and
loved me, and hummed the iullabys of child
hood. 1 would not discuss the question
which has agitated the country so long, pro
ducing sectional hate and bitterness.: There
are superior minus—a higher civilization, a
more lofty piane of thought and feeling. But
Christian faith is freeborn, and takes bold up
on the one cross—the Redeeming Christ, who
brakes down the partition wall, and unites
all Nationalities in one common brothei-
hood. J. B. C. Quili.iAS.
Men Who Want to Be Editors.
[Blakesley Hall.]
It is a ratlior peculiar thing, by the
way, that every man on earth believes
that he can run a newspaper. The ed
itor of every prominent journal receives
bushels of letters every week from un
grammatical and illiterate people telling
him exactly what to do with his paper.
Every man who attends a play in New
York knows more about it than the pro-
fessiofial critic who writes his opinions
for the following day’s paper, and the
politician does not live who could not
give the shrewdest newspaper man
points concerning the attitude of fifty
particular journal during a political
campaign. Aside from this every ship
per sn ipper who stands behind a coun
ter criticizes with shallow-pated viru
lence the editorials he reads in his morn
ing paper, and 1 do not believe there is a
man in any business whatsoever
in town, who is not thor
oughly convinced that if e\ery
other means of gaining a livelihood
should fail, he could step into a news
paper office and make a ,distinguished
success as a writer. Nothing proves
this more thoroughly than a glance at
the applicants for positions as reporters
on the New York press.
The managing editor of a big daily
here, told me a short time since that he
had an average of three calls every day
the year round, for positions on his
paper. “They come,” he said, ‘‘from
men who have studied law and can get
nothing to do, who have graduated as
physicians and are starving for pa
tients, who have failed in business, whe
are fresh from college and who have
been broken down in various walks oi
life. Not one of them has a shadow oi
doubt but that he will make a clever
writer, and yet the majority of them
have had no experience whatever in
newspaper offices and prove by then
maudlin and mushy ideas how thor
oughly out of place they would be a.
reporters. Bless your soul, you can 1
convince them that they are wrong.
They consider you an enemy forever,
after you have refused to accept then
services.

Ed. Star: I have been thinking what a
time us farmers do have. Sometimes we
pay our debt-, ard sometimes wa don’t. But
how it will be with the candidates who were
beaten in the last election, I can t tell. Soma
of them are de id officially and some finan
cially, and l don’t know if. I was to say the
whole thing was drunk and dral
together, I would tell the Ir ith. I was at
Moccosin Junction on the.day of the e!ej
tion, and the like was never known before.
Some were dr .ink a- d staggering about and
giving the lie to everything they heard
Some of them were foaming at the mouth,
and some would come around and say:
“Who are you hr?”
“Well, I don’t know hardly, who are you
for?”
"I am for Mr. , any man that would
not vote for him is no better than a mgro.
“Do you say that I am no better than a
negro ?”
“Yes I do,”
“Well, I can’t take that.”
At this j u u ctu re betook him dill, and
from that it was diff 1 ere, and d fl there; I
was more like mad dogs snapping at every
thing and 1 ttle boys drink and erasing from
one side of their mouth to the other, and
tbeir fathers standing by hearing it all.
On! what a shame and scandal it is to
have such conduct.

Men bay the poisou liquor and give it to
their fellowman, and say, do all you can for

so mucli that he can’t attend to his own

he thinks he received a great gift.
“What is man that God is so mindful of

the whole world is involved in rascality. Lei

A Very Strange Statement.
[Fannie B. Ward’s Mexico Letter.!
They tell, us that here, and all along
the southern coasts of Mexico, people
have a habit of inoculating thcmsolve:
with the virus of the rattlesnake oi
adder, which renders them forevei
afterwards absolutely safe from the
bite or sting of any reptile, howetei
poisonous. The truth of the statement
I cannot vouch for, but “will tell. the
tale as ’twas told tome.” The person
to be thus vaccinated is pricked Witt
the fang of the serpent, on the tongue,
in both arms, and on various parts of
the body, and the venom is thoroughly
introduced into the wounds. Imme
diately an erruption comes out, which
continues a few days, accompanied by
fever, after which the skin flakes off in
scales, something as in leprosy.
But now comes the unbelievable pari
of the story. Not only . can an ' inoc
ulated person handle the most poisonous
serpents with impunity—making , them
’come -at will,, fondling and caressing
them—but the bite of these 'persons
themselves is considered as fatal As that
of a rattlesnake! The reader is scarcely
expected to swallow ...this; but, never
theless, we have the testimony of several
gentlemen, both Mex’i.an and American,
whose word is unimpeachable—on other
subjects.
A well-known merchant of Tampico
(English) tells me ..that lie has been,
vainly endeavoring to make up his mind
to submit to the operation, as ■ he is
obliged to he traveling up_ atwl down
the coast a great deal, and is, therefore,-
in constant danger. He is always ac
companied on these expeditions by his
servant, an inoculated negro, and-when
he receives a bite or sting, the servant
immediately cures him by sucking the
wound. He says that this negro, not
long since, cured a white boy who had
been bitten by an inoculated young In
dian, with whom he had been, lighting,
and who exhibited every symptom ot
having been bitten by an adder, and
would undoubtedly have died without
this timely assistance.

Black lead is not lead at all, but a
compound of carbon and a small quan

Hot Water for Colds. •
[Medical Journal.]
Dr. George R. Shepherd, of Hartford,
Conn., says, in respect to the use of hot
water as a remedial agent in the treat
ment of inflammation of the mucous
membranes, “I have,used hot water as a
gargle for the past six or eight years.
In acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis,
and in coryza, or cold in the head if
properly used in the commencement of
the attack, it constitutes one of the
most effective remedies, being fre
quently promptly curative. To be oi
service it should be used in considerable
quantity (a half a pint or a pint at a
time), and just as hot as the throat will
tolerate. I have seen many cases oi
acute disease thus aborted, and can
commend the method with great confi
